LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Dot Hoyt Nebel posthumously upon the
occasion of her induction into the Schenectady City School District
Athletic Hall of Fame

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
outstanding athletes who have distinguished themselves through their
exceptional performance, attaining unprecedented success and the highest
level of personal achievement; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Dot
Hoyt Nebel posthumously upon the occasion of her induction into the
Schenectady City School District Athletic Hall of Fame, to be celebrated
at its 18th Annual Hall of Fame and Reunion Dinner on Monday, September
21, 2015, at Proctor's Theatre in Schenectady, New York; and
WHEREAS, A graduate of the original Schenectady High School in 1921,
Dot Hoyt Nebel was an important pioneer in the history of women's
skiing; and
WHEREAS, Dot Hoyt Nebel began skiing in Central Park, and became a
self-taught downhill and slalom expert; she was also a teacher and ski
club advisor at both Schenectady High School and Mont Pleasant High
School, where she coached the ski team; and
WHEREAS, This remarkable athlete accomplished numerous feats during
her distinguished career; she finished in third place at the 1938
Women's National Championship and had two 4th place finishes as part of
the 1938 United States International Ski Federation Team; and
WHEREAS, In 1939, Dot Hoyt Nebel won prestigious races at Mt. Rainier,
Mt. Hood, and Mt. Baker; in addition, she participated in the Olympic
Trials and was named to the 1940 Winter Olympics team; and
WHEREAS, Furthermore, Dot Hoyt Nebel captured back-to-back downhill
and slalom titles at the Eastern Skiing Championships, winning the 1940
downhill course in record time; and
WHEREAS, A trailblazer in women's skiing, Dot Hoyt Nebel was one of
the first female ski school instructors in the nation; she served as a
coach and instructor at Pico Peak and managed the Gore Mountain ski
school; Dot was also the Founder and first President of the New York
State Professional Ski Instructors Association and coached a future
Olympic Gold medalist; and
WHEREAS, In honor of her many outstanding accomplishments, Governor
George Pataki declared January 30, 1999, as "Dot Nebel Day" in the State
of New York; and
WHEREAS, This auspicious occasion presents a unique opportunity for
this Legislative Body to recognize and pay tribute to Dot Hoyt Nebel;
and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is proud to honor Dot Hoyt Nebel for
her extraordinary athletic accomplishments which are a tribute to her
skill, dedication and commitment; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations with
praise and pride to honor Dot Hoyt Nebel posthumously upon the occasion
of her induction into the Schenectady City School District Athletic Hall
of Fame; and be it further
RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the family of Dot Hoyt Nebel, and the Schenectady City School
District Athletic Hall of Fame.
