LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 100th Anniversary of THE
NATIONAL HERALD

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
those illustrious journalistic entities which have diligently and
consistently, year after year, recorded the history of their communities
and brought local news and news of the larger world to their readers;
and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commem-
orate the 100th Anniversary of THE NATIONAL HERALD; and
WHEREAS, Published continuously for the past 100 years, THE NATIONAL
HERALD, also known as ETHNIKOS KYRIX, is the only daily Greek language
newspaper in North America; and
WHEREAS, THE NATIONAL HERALD, now a century old, has kept Greek-Ameri-
cans informed and enlightened about the two worlds that command their
interest and shape their lives, Greece and the United States; it
presents news, opinions, and feature stories of paramount interest to
Greek-Americans; and
WHEREAS, Most importantly, THE NATIONAL HERALD has chronicled the
journey of Greek-Americans in their new-found land from the struggles of
the early immigrants to the many accomplishments they have achieved in
the United States; and
WHEREAS, THE NATIONAL HERALD was founded in April of 1915, by the
merchant Petros Tatanis; over the next several years, the newspaper was
sold to various individuals within the United States; and
WHEREAS, In 1947, Babis Marketos took over the company and remained
its publisher for the next 30 years; in 1977, Eugene Rossides, a lawyer
and undersecretary of the United States Treasury Department, became
publisher; and
WHEREAS, One year later, Eugene Rossides sold 50 percent of his stock
to George Leonardos and Antonis Diamataris; in 1979, Mr. Diamataris
purchased 100 percent of the stock of THE NATIONAL HERALD; and
WHEREAS, In 1982, THE NATIONAL HERALD relocated from Manhattan, New
York, to its privately owned headquarters in Long Island City; the news-
paper also maintains offices in both Boston and Washington, D.C.; and
WHEREAS, In 1984, THE NATIONAL HERALD obtained its own high-speed
presses; two years later, the doors of its Athens, Greece office opened
for business, and an office was later added in Nicosia, Cyprus; and
WHEREAS, Recognizing the need for an English language edition, the
newspaper launched its weekly edition, which became an overnight success
and quickly reached a substantial level of circulation; and
WHEREAS, In 2002, THE NATIONAL HERALD began its home delivery service
to subscribers in New York and the surrounding states; one year later,
an expansion of its home delivery reach included subscribers in the New
England area; and
WHEREAS, In 2004, THE NATIONAL HERALD launched its own website; today,
its website receives thousands of subscriptions annually from individ-
uals all around the country and the world; in addition to the Greek
paper of record in North America, it is recognized as the Greek website
of record as well; and
WHEREAS, THE NATIONAL HERALD relocated to its current, privately owned
ultra-modern headquarters in 2005, located in Long Island City, New
York; and
WHEREAS, For a generation now, THE NATIONAL HERALD has been under the
direction of its editor and publisher Antonis Diamataris; maintaining a
high quality and relevant newspaper, he continues to deliver a superior

product to all of its readers, and serves as an expressive voice to the
people of his community by providing a platform for all members of the
community; and
WHEREAS, Our newspapers provide a tremendous service to citizens
across the State of New York by keeping them informed about current
events; the democracy of our State and Nation is strengthened by a
responsible citizenry which is actively engaged in reading and kept
abreast of news affecting their lives; and
WHEREAS, As THE NATIONAL HERALD moves into the future, it carries with
it the legacy of a distinguished journalistic history and an outstanding
record of growth and achievement; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 100th Anniversary of THE NATIONAL HERALD; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Antonis Diamataris, Editor and Publisher, THE NATIONAL
HERALD.
