LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending Reverend Terry Troia for 30 years of
distinguished service to the Staten Island community on May 12, 2015

WHEREAS, Religious leaders, and the many spiritual, social and educa-
tional benefits they confer, play a vital role in the development of the
moral fabric of a responsible citizenry; and
WHEREAS, It is the tradition of this State and this Nation to pay
tribute to those individuals who have contributed to the ethical and
spiritual values of their communities; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to commend Reverend
Terry Troia for 30 years of distinguished service to the Staten Island
community, to be celebrated at a Spring Gala held in her honor, on Tues-
day, May 12, 2015; and
WHEREAS, Terry Troia received her doctorate from the Union Theological
Seminary in Manhattan; in 1984, she became a volunteer at Project Hospi-
tality, an interfaith organization which serves the hungry and homeless
community of Staten Island; and
WHEREAS, One year later, she became the Executive Director of Project
Hospitality, a position she continues to hold today; and
WHEREAS, A Minister of the Reformed Church, Terry Troia is also the
pastor of the New Utrecht Reformed Church in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn; she
is a member of several city and statewide boards including the New York
City Commission on Economic Opportunity; the New York City Commission on
AIDS; the New York City Temporary Commission on Day Laborer Job Sites;
the New York City Committee to End Homelessness; the New York City
Commission for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Questioning
(LGBTQ) Runaway and Homeless Youth; and the New York City Inter-Agency
Task Force on Youth Violence, as well as El Centro del Inmigrante; and
WHEREAS, Reverend Terry Troia holds numerous leadership positions in
several organizations including the Port Richmond Improvement Associ-
ation, New Brighton Coalition of Concerned Citizens, the Port Richmond
Anti-Violence Task Force, and the Staten Island Immigrant Council; and
WHEREAS, This remarkable woman holds the title of co-Chair of the New
York State Department of Health, Statewide AIDS Service Delivery Consor-
tium, the Chair of the Staten Island Family Health Care Coalition, and
the Staten Island Clergy Leadership; and
WHEREAS, Since Hurricane Sandy hit the shores of Staten Island in
October of 2012, Reverend Terry Troia has been at the forefront of
relief efforts; immediately after the storm, she ensured that the
victims had the essentials, such as clothing for warmth, food to eat and
shelter; and
WHEREAS, Reverend Terry Troia turned Project Hospitality's mobile food
truck into a commissary and distributed cleaning and household supplies,
blankets, pampers, toilet paper, food and water to people in the disas-
ter area; a week later, she was asked to manage the evacuation sites at
Bayley Seton Hospital and Mt. Manresa; and
WHEREAS, Today, Reverend Terry Troia holds the esteemed title of Pres-
ident of The Staten island Community and Interfaith Long Term Recovery
Organization; she also serves as an Adjunct Lecturer at the New York
City College of Technology and is an ESL teacher; and
WHEREAS, When Reverend Terry Troia is not working, she volunteers her
time and energies at the Eye Openers Youth Against Violence Organiza-
tion, playing basketball with the local youth in the New Brighton
section of Staten Island, and enjoys teaching scripture; and
WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an individ-
ual for the benefit of others which Reverend Terry Troia has displayed
throughout her life; and

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individ-
uals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Reverend Terry Troia for 30 years of distinguished service to
the Staten Island community; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Reverend Terry Troia.
