LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION paying tribute to Betty Lennon after many years
of distinguished service to the public employees of New York State, and
congratulating her upon the occasion of her retirement as President of
the Northeast Labor Council
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body seeks to acknowledge those individuals
whose professional lives and civic endeavors serve to enhance the stat-
ure of the State of New York; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to pay trib-
ute to Betty Lennon after many years of distinguished service to the
public employees of New York State, and to congratulate her upon the
occasion of her retirement as President of the Northeast Labor Council;
she officially retired on Wednesday, December 17, 2014; and
WHEREAS, Betty Lennon began her long and illustrious career of helping
workers when she was hired as a secretary at the Civil Service Employees
Association (CSEA) in the fall of 1965; and
WHEREAS, This esteemed woman served as President of CSEA Local 612
from 1989 to 2001; she continued to be an active member, serving as its
Vice President, and later, Secretary, until her retirement from SUNY
Plattsburgh in 2009; and
WHEREAS, Betty Lennon also helped organize workers at the University
of Minnesota at St. Paul while serving on the education committee of her
parent union, the American Federation of State County and Municipal
Employees (AFSCME); and
WHEREAS, As President of the Northeast Labor Council, Betty Lennon
dutifully served the counties of Clinton, Franklin and the northern part
of Essex for 18 years; during this time, she worked tirelessly to advo-
cate on behalf of working people, bringing together local union affil-
iates from across the North Country; and
WHEREAS, Today, as an active member of the Coalition of Labor Union
Women (CLUW) she helps unify all union women around common problems and
concerns they may face in the workplace; and
WHEREAS, Throughout her remarkable career, Betty Lennon has fought for
the rights, dignity and respect of public employees at the local, state,
and national level; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those who
enhance the quality of life in their community and have shown a long and
sustained commitment to the maintenance of high standards in their
profession, certainly have earned the recognition and applause of all
the citizens of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to pay
tribute to Betty Lennon after many years of distinguished service to the
public employees of New York State and to congratulate her upon the
occasion of her retirement as President of the Northeast Labor Council;
and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Betty Lennon.
