LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 125th Anniversary of St.
George's Episcopal Church of Chadwicks, New York on April 19, 2015

WHEREAS, Religious institutions, and the many spiritual, social and
educational benefits they confer, play a vital role in the development
of the moral fabric of a responsible citizenry; and
WHEREAS, It is the tradition of this State and Nation to pay tribute
to those institutions and individuals who have contributed to the
ethical and spiritual values of their communities; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commem-
orate the 125th Anniversary of St. George's Episcopal Church of Chad-
wicks, New York; and
WHEREAS, This momentous occasion was celebrated with a Worship Service
on Sunday, April 19, 2015; Bishop of the Diocese, the Right Reverend
Gladstone Adams, Ill was present to celebrate the Holy Eucharist; and
WHEREAS, In 1867, rectors from St. Stephen's, New Hartford held
cottage lectures and services in the school at Chadwicks Mills; by 1874,
services were held once every four weeks at Chadwicks and the congre-
gation numbered between 60 and 75 people; and
WHEREAS, In 1889, a chapel, located on Main Street was erected in
memory of George W. Chadwick, through a generous gift given to the
village by his widow and the Chadwick family; for the laying of the
cornerstone, the mills were shut down to give employees an opportunity
to attend the ceremonies; and
WHEREAS, The Consecration of the memorial chapel of St. George's Epis-
copal Church took place on April 21, 1890, with many clergy and a large
assembly of people present; services were held at Chadwicks Mills from
various area churches until 1912, when the Reverend Curtis H. Whedon
became rector of St. George's; and
WHEREAS, St. George's Episcopal Church later became a mission and, in
1972, attained its present status as a parish; this vital congregation
continues to serve its members and community through regular worship
services, a variety of parish and community activities and as part of
the Diocese of Central New York, the Utica-Rome District and its shared
ministries with parishes in Clark Mills and Utica; and
WHEREAS, At present, St. George's Episcopal Church stands humbly,
prayerfully, meditatively and joyfully; and
WHEREAS, St. George's Episcopal Church stands on the threshold of
tomorrow, prepared to meet the challenges of the coming decades while
retaining that spiritual resolve which characterizes its past; and
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to take note of
enduring religious institutions and to bring such institutions to the
attention of the people of this Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 125th Anniversary of St. George's Episcopal Church of
Chadwicks, New York on April 19, 2015; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Reverend Terry Sheldon, St. George's Episcopal Church, Chad-
wicks, New York.
