LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION mourning the death of Hugh A. Kearney, engineer,
distinguished citizen and devoted member of his community

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
citizens of the Empire State whose lifework and civic endeavor served to
enhance the quality of life in their communities and the great State of
New York; and
WHEREAS, Hugh A. Kearney, of Bainbridge, New York, died on Friday,
January 8, 2015, at the age of 86; and
WHEREAS, Born on July 28, 1929, in Bellevue, Pennsylvania, Hugh A.
Kearney was the son of the late James and Agnes (Crooks) Kearny; and
WHEREAS, After graduating from high school, Hugh A. Kearney proudly
served his country as a member of the United States Navy from 1948 to
1952; and
WHEREAS, Following the completion of his military service, Hugh A.
Kearney married Joyce Oliver at a ceremony held in Bainbridge in 1953;
together, they shared 62 years of love and marriage, and were the proud
parents of three daughters, as well as the loving grandparents of four
grandchildren and one great-grandchild; and
WHEREAS, During his illustrious 37 year career, Hugh A. Kearney worked
as both an engineer and supervisor at Amphenol Corporation in Sidney,
New York, and contributed five and one-half years on the International
Space Station; he was also responsible for numerous patents on products
and manufacturing processes; and
WHEREAS, Hugh A. Kearney's commitment to excellence, and his spirit of
humanity, carried over into all fields of enterprise, including charita-
ble and civic endeavors; he was a longtime member of the Bainbridge Fire
Department, and served as Secretary Treasurer of the Fire District for
18 years; and
WHEREAS, A dedicated member of the Bainbridge community, Hugh A. Kear-
ney ably held the position of Bainbridge Town Supervisor for 18 years;
he also served as a member of the local school board for five years,
including two years as President; and
WHEREAS, In addition, Hugh A. Kearney contributed his time as Treasur-
er of his church for seven years, was a Board member of the Chenango
County IDA, and enjoyed volunteering at the Classic Car Museum in
Norwich; and
WHEREAS, The recipient of numerous accolades for his outstanding
service, Hugh A. Kearney was named 2001 Bainbridge Citizen of the Year,
and received an award for his commitment to community from the Chenango
County Chamber of Commerce; and
WHEREAS, Predeceased by his parents; his two sisters, Martha and
Helen; and granddaughter, Bethany, Hugh A. Kearney is survived by his
beloved wife, Joyce; their three daughters, Janet (Carl), Carol (Thomas)
and Nancy (Johnny); four grandchildren, Sarah, Ian, Claire and Natalie;
and one great-granddaughter, Kyrsten; as well as his sister, Elizabeth
(Ray); and brother, Peter (Karen); and
WHEREAS, Armed with a humanistic spirit, imbued with a sense of
compassion, and comforted by a loving family, Hugh A. Kearney leaves
behind a legacy which will long endure the passage of time and will
remain as a comforting memory to all he served and befriended; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
mourn the death of Hugh A. Kearney, engineer, distinguished citizen and
devoted member of his community; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the family of Hugh A. Kearney.
