LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Kathy Manley upon the occasion of her
designation as recipient of the Carol S. Knox Award by the Capital
Region Chapter of the New York Civil Liberties Union

WHEREAS, From time to time this Legislative Body takes note of certain
individuals that it wishes to recognize for having given their time and
energies to serve the best interests of their communities and to public-
ly acknowledge their service; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Kathy Manley upon the occasion of her designation as recipient of the
Carol S. Knox Award by the Capital Region Chapter of the New York Civil
Liberties Union celebrated at its Annual Awards Ceremony on Wednesday,
November 18, 2015, at the Polish Community Center, Albany, New York; and
WHEREAS, The Capital Region Chapter of the New York Civil Liberties
Union strives to educate the public about current civil liberties
issues, respond to requests for legal assistance, and advocate for and
against local legislation with civil liberties components; and
WHEREAS, The Carol S. Knox award was established to honor an excep-
tional individual whose dedicated work demonstrates their commitment to
civil liberties; and
WHEREAS, Since 1997, Kathy Manley has been employed at Kindlon Shanks
& Associates; for almost two decades, she has focused on criminal
defense and constitutional rights cases; and
WHEREAS, Kathy Manley centers her work on appeals and motions, and has
written many winning briefs before the New York State Court of Appeals,
the Appellate Division, the Third Department and other courts; in addi-
tion, she has written many suppression motions which have successfully
challenged illegal searches and seizures; and
WHEREAS, This remarkable woman is involved in many civil rights groups
such as the Muslim Solidarity Committee, National Lawyers Guild, Project
Salam and the National Coalition to Protect Civil Freedoms; and
WHEREAS, Currently, Kathy Manley holds the position of Vice President
of the Capital Region Chapter of the New York Civil Liberties Union, and
is an active member of the Occupy Albany Legal Team; and
WHEREAS, Kathy Manley was chosen as recipient of the Carol S. Knox
award for her dedication in the pursuit of justice for the most discrim-
inated against individuals in our society; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individ-
uals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Kathy Manley upon the occasion of her designation as recipient of
the Carol S. Knox Award by the Capital Region Chapter of the New York
Civil Liberties Union; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Kathy Manley.
