HONORING Marlene and Stu Horowitz upon the
occasion of their designation as recipients of the
Pillars of the Community Award by Young Israel of
Plainview on March 26, 2017

WHEREAS, Individuals who give of their time and energies and serve
the best interests of their communities are an asset beyond remuneration
and cannot be sufficiently extolled; and

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to take note of
and publicly acknowledge individuals and organizations of remarkable
integrity and character who distinguish themselves in service to their
faith and community; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Marlene and Stu Horowitz upon the occasion of their designation as
recipients of the Pillars of the Community Award by Young Israel of
Plainview to be celebrated at its 45th Annual Testimonial Dinner on
Sunday, March 26, 2017, at the Jericho Jewish Center in Jericho, New
York; and

WHEREAS, Young Israel of Plainview is comprised of more than 200
families who enjoy various youth programs, and Shiurim and educational
programs led by Rabbi Elie Weissman and Yoetzet Halacha Avital Weissman;
and

WHEREAS, Each year, this prestigious awards ceremony recognizes
individuals for their contributions to the Center and the Jewish
community-at-large by acting as moral pillars and dispensers of wisdom
and advice, providing continued service and leadership, and acting
generously in the spirit of Tzedakah; and

WHEREAS, Widely known for their extraordinary dedication to Israel
and the local community, Marlene and Stu Horowitz's philanthropic and
leadership endeavors inspire all of those who are lucky enough to know
them; and

WHEREAS, In 1984, Marlene and Stu Horowitz and their family moved to
Plainview, New York; once the children were in school, Marlene went back
to work as a reference librarian at the POB Public Library; four years
later, she became the Medical Librarian at Plainview and Syosset
Hospitals, a position from which she retired; and

WHEREAS, Dedicated to her shul, Marlene Horowitz served as a Trustee
of the Young Israel of Plainview; as a member of the Education
Committee, she coordinated and taught the Hebrew Reading Crash Course
for National Jewish Outreach; and

WHEREAS, In addition, Marlene Horowitz was a National Council of
Young Israel delegate, and held the titles of both Financial and
Corresponding Secretary and co-President of Young Israel of Plainview
Sisterhood; and


WHEREAS, Marlene Horowitz has also been active in the Mikveh
Association of Long Island and Hebrew Academy of Nassau County PTA; she
served as co-President and member of the Board of Directors of the
Mikveh Association of Long Island, and was a HANC PTA Corresponding
Secretary; and

WHEREAS, Stu Horowitz is a retired teacher, and was a coordinator
and coach for the Young Israel of Plainview Little League; he was also a
vital member of the Kiddush and Catering Committee and the Youth
Committee; and

WHEREAS, Currently, Stu Horowitz is Gabbai of the weekday
Mincha/Maariv minyan, and he proofreads the shul newsletter, The
Shaliach; he also serves as the Corresponding Secretary of the Mikveh
Association of Long Island; and

WHEREAS, With them throughout have been their three children,
Shabtai (Stacy), Sara (Daniel), and Eli; and their six grandchildren,
Yael, Avital, Devorah, Atara, Ayala, and Reuven, all of whom feel
privileged to be a part of their lives and rejoice in their
achievements; and

WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by
individuals for the benefit of others which Stu and Marlene Horowitz
have displayed throughout their lives; and

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when
individuals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our
attention, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens
of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Marlene and Stu Horowitz upon the occasion of their designation as
recipients of the Pillars of the Community Award by Young Israel of
Plainview; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Marlene and Stu Horowitz.
