HONORING Angela Davis upon the occasion of her
designation for special recognition by Groundswell
on April 6, 2017

WHEREAS, From time to time this Legislative Body takes note of
certain extraordinary individuals it wishes to recognize for their
valued contributions to the success and progress of society and publicly
acknowledge their endeavors which have enhanced the basic humanity among
us all; and

WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Angela Davis
upon the occasion of her designation for special recognition by
Groundswell, to be celebrated at its Freedom is a Constant Struggle
Event on Thursday, April 6, 2017, at The Graduate Center, CUNY, New
York, New York; and

WHEREAS, Angela Davis is an activist, scholar and writer who has
spent her life advocating for the oppressed; she has authored several
books, including Women, Culture and Politics, Women, Race and Class, and
Are Prisons Obsolete?; and

WHEREAS, In addition, she has worked as a professor, advocating for
gender equity, prison reform and alliances across color lines; and

WHEREAS, Born on January 26, 1944, in Birmingham, Alabama, Angela
Davis became a master scholar who studied at the prestigious Sorbonne,
University of Paris; and

WHEREAS, From a young age, Angela Davis fought against social
injustice, organizing interracial study groups as a teenager which were
often times broken up by the police; and

WHEREAS, Later moving north, Angela Davis studied philosophy at
Brandeis University in Massachusetts; she went on to earn a graduate
degree from the University of California, San Diego, where she was later
hired as a professor; and

WHEREAS, After spending several years traveling and lecturing,
Angela Davis returned to teaching; today, she is a professor at the
University of California, Santa Cruz, where she teaches courses on the
history of consciousness; and

WHEREAS, It has always been the objective of this Legislative Body
to honor and support those individuals who have displayed their
commitment to the betterment of their communities, and it is the intent
of this Legislative Body to inscribe upon its records, this tribute to
Angela Davis, that future generations may know and appreciate her
admirable character, her many benevolent deeds, and the respect and
esteem in which she is held by her peers; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Angela Davis upon the occasion of her designation for special
recognition by Groundswell on April 6, 2017; and be it further


RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Angela Davis.
