Senate Resolution No. 1131

COMMENDING the Canal View Cafe upon the occasion
of celebrating its 40th Anniversary on January 13,
2017

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize
illustrious culinary establishments which have positively impacted and
substantially contributed to the vitality of their communities; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commend the Canal View Cafe upon the occasion of celebrating its 40th
Anniversary on Friday, January 13, 2017; and

WHEREAS, A landmark within its community, the Canal View Cafe,
located in the Village of Sylvan Beach, New York, is one of the area's
most well-known and respected restaurants; and

WHEREAS, In 1977, Marge Testa opened a small cafe along the canal in
Sylvan Beach with a counter and seven tables, and subsequently, a
landmark was born; and

WHEREAS, The Canal View Cafe has been in continual operation now for
40 years; what started as a breakfast and sandwich shop catering to
fishermen and locals has evolved into today's full service restaurant;
and

WHEREAS, After working with her mother since its inception, Jean
Tabarrini, bought the Canal View Cafe from her in 1990; and

WHEREAS, After receiving a sign from an old Sylvan Beach photo
studio that read, "Pictures taken any place on the beach on short
notice," Jean Tabarrini got the idea to start a collection of beach
souvenirs and use history as the restaurant's theme, bringing guests
face to face with a world of Sylvan Beach's past; Jean has found most of
her treasures at antique shops and shows, and is always on the look-out
for a reminder of the Beach's storied past; and

WHEREAS, Often referred to as the Sylvan Smithsonian, the Canal View
Cafe has stood as a beloved establishment which has provided a friendly,
open environment for patrons to collectively gather and share their
thoughts, ideas and life experiences for four decades; and

WHEREAS, It is with great pleasure that this Legislative Body
acknowledges this exceptional business and its contributions to the
local and State economies, fully confident that it will continue to
enjoy the sparkling successes it has experienced thus far; now,
therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend the Canal View Cafe upon the occasion of celebrating its 40th
Anniversary; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Jean Tabarrini, Owner, the Canal View Cafe.
