COMMEMORATING the 200th Anniversary of the Town of
Davenport, New York
WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to honor and
commemorate the proud and distinguished histories of the towns and
villages which comprise the noble body of this great Empire State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate the 200th Anniversary of the Town of Davenport, New York, to
be celebrated with a weekend of festivities on Saturday and Sunday, July
29 and 30, 2017; and
WHEREAS, In 1810, John Davenport, a then-34-year-old entrepreneur,
decided to go out on his own, picking up and moving westward to what was
then known as lot 24 of the Charlotte River Patent; and
WHEREAS, During this time, John Davenport opened a store near his
new home on the south side of the Charlotte River, in the vicinity of
today's intersection of Brickhouse Hill Road and state Route 23 in
Davenport, New York; as a storekeeper, he got to know everyone settling
in the area and was a trusted neighbor of good repute; and
WHEREAS, In the early months of 1817, a petition began circulating
to form a new town and on March 31, 1817, the Town of Davenport was
formed by the state Legislature; and
WHEREAS, The Town of Davenport held its first meeting on Tuesday,
April 8, 1817, in the home of Widow Sigsbee; town officials and
functionaries were elected, with John Davenport elected as town
supervisor; and
WHEREAS, From its humble beginnings of 800 people occupying
approximately 140 homes, the Town of Davenport, located in Delaware
County, has grown to a population of nearly 3,000 individuals; and
WHEREAS, Of historic origin, and remaining fruitful over the ebb and
flow of decades of growth and change, the Town of Davenport continues to
provide the quintessential quality of life for its residents; and
WHEREAS, The residents of the Town of Davenport have a bright
outlook for the future of their community, which remains a beautiful
place in which to live and raise a family; and
WHEREAS, In recognition of the Town of Davenport's rich history and
enduring contribution to the State of New York, this Legislative Body is
proud to pay tribute to this spirited town upon the occasion of its
200th Anniversary; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 200th Anniversary of the Town of Davenport, and to
enthusiastically salute its residents as they celebrate this auspicious
occasion; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the Town of Davenport, New York.
