COMMEMORATING the 200th Anniversary of the
founding of the Town of Covert

WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to honor and
commemorate the distinguished histories of the communities which
comprise the noble body of this great Empire State; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate the 200th Anniversary of the founding of the Town of Covert,
in Seneca County, New York; and

WHEREAS, This auspicious milestone will be celebrated with a myriad
of events held throughout the year; Supervisor, Michael G. Reynolds and
the residents of the Town of Covert will gather together to view the
dedication of a plaque noting the original date of creation as part of
Tompkins County, and attend a number of public programs in cooperation
with the Interlaken Historical Society; and

WHEREAS, In addition, on July 29, 2017, the Town of Covert will host
a Summer Social, where people can attend various events, listen to
presentations and bands, and eat delicious food; and

WHEREAS, On September 9, 2017, the Historical Society will present
200 Years of Transportation; this educational event will focus on the
many types of transportation used throughout the settlement and growth
of the town; and

WHEREAS, Finally, on October 14, 2017, the Town will hold a good
old-fashioned barn dance with two bands providing a variety of dance
music to encourage people to join in the merriment, and celebrate once
again the changes, and changelessness of the community through the
years; and

WHEREAS, On April 7, 1817, the New York State Legislature created
The Town of Covert from a portion of the Town of Ovid in Seneca County,
and added Covert to the newly created Tompkins County; at that time, the
Town of Covert was part of The Military Tract of Central New York,
holding military lots 51-100; and

WHEREAS, In April of 1819, the Town of Covert was returned to Seneca
County; in 1826, the western half of the town was taken to create the
Town of Lodi, and in 1843, the northern boundary of the Town was moved
approximately one mile north so that the village of Farmer would be
wholly within the town; and

WHEREAS, Remaining fruitful over the ebb and flow of decades of
growth and change, the Town of Covert continues its commitment to
enhancing the quality of life of its citizens, ensuring a positive
business, institutional and educational climate, and providing all
essential services; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 200th Anniversary of the founding of the Town of Covert,
recognizing the significance of the role it continues to play in the
life of the community of the State of New York; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Michael G. Reynolds, Supervisor, Town of Covert.
