HONORING Susan Newborn upon the occasion of her
designation as recipient of the Distinguished
Faculty Award by the North Shore Hebrew Academy on
April 2, 2017
WHEREAS, It is the practice of this Legislative Body to take note of
and publicly acknowledge individuals of remarkable integrity and
character whose endeavors have enhanced the quality of education in this
great State; and
WHEREAS, The result of many individual efforts, the excellence and
the success of North Shore Hebrew Academy High School is due in large
part to the efforts of Susan Newborn; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Susan
Newborn upon the occasion of her designation as recipient of the
Distinguished Faculty Award by the North Shore Hebrew Academy, to be
celebrated at its Annual Dinner on Sunday, April 2, 2017, at the Old
Westbury Hebrew Congregation, Old Westbury, New York; and
WHEREAS, For more than six decades, the North Shore Hebrew Academy
has provided the students of the Great Neck community and surrounding
New York area with a premier General and Judaic studies education; its
Modern Orthodox Yeshiva day school serves toddlers through twelfth
graders in co-educational classes, and its curriculum drives academic
excellence, intellectual pursuit and open discussion, support of
learners, and kindness towards others; and
WHEREAS, One of the founding faculty members of North Shore Hebrew
Academy High School (NSHAHS), Susan Newborn has been working in Jewish
education for more than 40 years; her classrooms are always places of
profound and rigorous intellectual activity, and her students respect
her expertise as well as her methodical, logical presentation of
material; and
WHEREAS, A Brooklyn native, whose professional degrees were earned
at CUNY schools, Susan Newborn has worked in numerous yeshiva high
schools in Brooklyn and on Long Island, teaching English and Creative
Writing and inspiring thousands of students during her illustrious
career; and
WHEREAS, Susan Newborn has served as Chair of the English Department
at North Shore Hebrew Academy High School since its inception in 2001;
in this capacity she is in constant communication with members of her
department, ensuring the curriculum is relevant and exciting for
students; and
WHEREAS, With a steadfast and unwavering commitment to North Shore
Hebrew Academy High School, Susan Newborn regularly mentors new teachers
and is an unofficial member of the technology team, where she shares her
understanding of the application of cutting-edge technology to
educational venues; and
WHEREAS, Susan Newborn's role as Coordinator of the Middle States
Steering Committee has had a profound impact on the long-standing
success of North Shore Hebrew Academy High School; she spearheaded the
process of effecting the unprecedented accreditation of the school in
just its second year, and she has helped NSHAHS maintain its standing
through several successive accreditation periods; and
WHEREAS, With a passion for writing, Susan Newborn is involved in
creating promotional material for the school and she often shares her
poetry with her students; and
WHEREAS, Susan Newborn's tremendous professional contributions have
been instrumental in making North Shore Hebrew Academy High School the
esteemed institution it is today; she is truly an inspiration and role
model for her students; and
WHEREAS, With her throughout have been her husband, Ira, and her two
children, all of whom feel privileged to be a part of her life and
rejoice in her achievements; and
WHEREAS, A significant contributor to education in New York State,
Susan Newborn has continually demonstrated an impressive dedication, an
unparalleled devotion and an unremitting enthusiasm for the quality of
the educational programs and opportunities offered at North Shore Hebrew
Academy High School for the benefit of its faculty and students, as well
as for the entire community; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Susan Newborn upon the occasion of her designation as recipient of
the Distinguished Faculty Award by the North Shore Hebrew Academy on
April 2, 2017; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Susan Newborn.
