Senate Resolution No. 1538

HONORING James Janis upon the occasion of his
designation for special recognition in conjunction
with the observance of National Library Workers Day
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize that
the quality and character of life in the communities across the great
State of New York is reflective of certain exemplary institutions and
individuals whose purpose is dedicated to serving the community and the
needs of its citizenry; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
James Janis upon the occasion of his designation for special recognition
in conjunction with the observance of National Library Workers Day, to
be celebrated on Tuesday, April 11, 2017, in Mineola, New York; and
WHEREAS, National Library Workers Day (NLWD) is a day for library
staff, users, administrators and friends groups to recognize the
valuable contributions made by all library workers; and
WHEREAS, On January 25, 2003, a resolution was proposed to recognize
the hard work, dedication, and expertise of library support staff and
librarians on the Tuesday of National Library Week, and to designate
this day as National Library Workers Day; and
WHEREAS, With a Masters in Library Science from Queens College,
James Janis has served as the Historian for the Hicksville Public
Library for almost a decade, however his illustrious career in
librarianship extends to nearly 40 years; and
WHEREAS, As Hicksville Historian, James Janis has done extensive
primary research on America's Wars from 1898 to 1953, discovering more
than a dozen forgotten veterans and detailing their exploits, as well as
recovering many artifacts and documents; he also examines the history of
the town itself during these conflicts; and
WHEREAS, To share these discoveries with the populace, James Janis
has created narrative displays and multimedia programs on the Spanish
American War, World War I and World War II for presentation at the
Hicksville Public Library, local historical societies, and other
libraries throughout Nassau County; and
WHEREAS, The success of the Hicksville Public Library is in direct
correlation to the efforts of James Janis, whose involvement is, and
always has been, characterized by an impressive commitment, an unbridled
enthusiasm, and an uncompromising standard of excellence in all
endeavors on behalf of the library and the community it serves; and
WHEREAS, This auspicious occasion presents an opportunity for this
Legislative Body to recognize and pay tribute to James Janis; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when
individuals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our
attention, they should be recognized and applauded by all the citizens
of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor James Janis upon the occasion of his designation for special
recognition in conjunction with the observance of National Library
Workers Day; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to James Janis.
