COMMENDING the United States Postal Service upon
the occasion of producing the Dorothy Height Forever
Stamp, which went on sale nationwide, February 1,
2017

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to commend the
efforts of those organizations who seek to bring recognition to
historical figures within the State of New York, and in doing so, help
to ensure that the complete history of our State and Nation is preserved
and shared with present generations of citizens; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commend the United States Postal Service upon the occasion of producing
the Dorothy Height Forever Stamp, which went on sale nationwide,
Wednesday, February 1, 2017, in celebration of Black History Month; and

WHEREAS, Dorothy Height was a true pioneer; as the President of the
National Council of Negro Women, she tirelessly advocated for the rights
of both women and African Americans; and

WHEREAS, In 1965, Dorothy Height established the Center for Radical
Justice, which she led for 12 years; in 1957, she became the President
of the National Council of Negro Women; through her steadfast efforts
with the Center and the Council, she became one of the leading figures
of the Civil Rights Movement; and

WHEREAS, After the famous March on Washington, Dorothy Height joined
the fight for women's rights; in 1971, she helped found the National
Women's Political Caucus with Gloria Steinem, Betty Friedan, and Shirley
Chisholm; and

WHEREAS, Along with her position as a role model for all women,
Dorothy Height worked at the YWCA until her retirement in 1977; after
she left her job, she continued to run the National Council of Negro
Women for two more decades; one of her later projects focused on
strengthening the African-American family by organizing the first Black
Family Reunion, a celebration of traditions and values; and

WHEREAS, For her resolute and unremitting commitment to all women
and all African Americans, Dorothy Height received numerous awards and
accolades, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the
Congressional Gold Medal; and

WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is pleased to have this opportunity
to express its highest admiration for the Dorothy Height stamps, and for
all of the individuals who worked to bring proper attention to a person
who merits recognition in the grand panorama of the history of our State
and Nation; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend the United States Postal Service upon the occasion of producing

the Dorothy Height Forever Stamp, which went on sale nationwide,
February 1, 2017; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Postmaster General Megan J. Brennan.
