COMMENDING Cody McCone upon the occasion of his
designation for special recognition by the Sisters
of Mercy on May 10, 2017
WHEREAS, The quality and character of life in this Nation, and the
great State of New York, is reflective of the purposeful lives and good
works of those civic-minded community members who dedicate their lives
and careers to the service of others; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commend Cody McCone upon the occasion of his designation for special
recognition by the Sisters of Mercy to be celebrated at its 18th Annual
Evening of Mercy Gala on Wednesday, May 10, 2017, at The Yale Club of
New York City; and
WHEREAS, The Sisters of Mercy work passionately to eliminate
poverty, the widespread denial of human rights, the degradation of
earth, the increase in violence and racism, the continued oppression of
women, the abuse of children, the mistreatment of immigrants and the
lack of solidarity among people and nations; and
WHEREAS, Cody McCone earned his bachelor's degree in Rhetoric from
Loyola University, and his Juris Doctor from John Marshall Law School;
he was admitted to the New York State Bar, the United States District
Court, the Southern District of New York, the Eastern District of New
York, and the United States Supreme Court; and
WHEREAS, In April of 1987, Cody McCone joined O'Dwyer & Bernstein,
LLP, where he has earned a reputation as a tireless advocate for his
clients, many of whom have been injured in construction site accidents
in the New York area, including the Freedom Tower, and Buildings No. 3
and No. 4 at the World Trade Center; he represents clients not only in
the courts, but also before numerous administrative agencies; and
WHEREAS, Well-respected for his considerable experience and vast
knowledge, Cody McCone serves as a judge at the New York Law School
Annual Charles W. Froessel Moot Court Competition, and has lectured on
Personal Injury and Construction Accident Law topics at Notre Dame Law
School, the School of Law at Rutgers University, and at the Kings Inn
and Mansion House in Dublin, Ireland, where he was a guest co-speaker
with Justice Susan Denham of the Supreme Court of Ireland and the Right
Honorable Michael Mulcahy, Lord Mayor of Dublin; he has also appeared as
Counsel in the Coroners Inquest Court in Dublin; and
WHEREAS, Moreover, Cody McCone is a member of the Judicial Screening
Panel for the Appellate Division, Second Department, State of New York;
the Sisters of Mercy Board of Directors, and the Marriage and
Relationships Institute; since July of 2015, he has served on the Board
of Directors of HeartShare St. Vincent's Services; and
WHEREAS, Proud of his Irish heritage, Cody McCone works with the
Emerald Isle Immigration Center, and is a volunteer for the Coney Island
Annual Great Irish Fair; for the past 25 years, he has been an active
supporter and defender of Irish human rights; and
WHEREAS, In addition, Cody McCone held the position of President of
the Brehon Law Society, an Irish-American Bar Association of attorneys
whose objective is to achieve peace and unity in Northern Ireland
through the legal process; and
WHEREAS, Cody McCone also served as Acting President of Division
Five, the Paul O'Dwyer Division of the Ancient Order of Hibernians of
Kings County; in 2009, he was named the Brooklyn Irishman of the Year,
and the 2010 Brooklyn Shamrock Football Club Guest of Honor; and
WHEREAS, With him throughout have been his wife, Rhea, and their two
daughters, Ciara and Kaeleigh, all of whom have shown him love and
support and rejoice in his many achievements; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those who
enhance the quality of life in their community and have shown a long and
sustained commitment to the maintenance of high standards in their
profession, certainly have earned the recognition and applause of all
the citizens of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Cody McCone upon the occasion of his designation for special
recognition by the Sisters of Mercy on May 10, 2017; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Cody McCone.
