MOURNING the death of George Malek, distinguished
citizen and devoted member of his community

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
citizens of the State of New York whose lifework and civic endeavor
served to enhance the quality of life in their communities and the great
State of New York; and

WHEREAS, George Malek of Buffalo, New York, passed away on Friday,
March 17, 2017, at the age of 82; and

WHEREAS, Born on April 8, 1934, to Stephen and Theresa Malek, George
Malek graduated from Bishop Fallon High School, Canisius College and the
University at Buffalo, where he studied management; and

WHEREAS, George Malek valiantly served in the United States Army
from 1957 to 1959, participating in special services while based in
Germany; and

WHEREAS, For more than 25 years, George Malek worked in leadership
positions in the automobile business, before becoming general manager of
then the nation's oldest Lincoln Mercury dealership in Buffalo, D&E
Motors; and

WHEREAS, Upon his retirement in 1980, George Malek devoted more than
13 years to the Heritage Centers where he helped developmentally
disabled adults find employment; and

WHEREAS, George Malek's commitment to excellence, and his spirit of
humanity, carried over into all fields of enterprise, including
charitable and civic endeavors; and

WHEREAS, With a steadfast and unwavering commitment to his
community, George Malek served as President of the Amherst Symphony
Orchestra Association, Vice President of Upstage New York, Chairman of
the Town of Amherst Arts and Culture Board, and as a Board Member of
Studio Arena Theatre; and

WHEREAS, In addition, he gave tirelessly of his time and energies to
such organizations as United Way, Hospice Buffalo, the Morningside
Homeowners Association, and the North Forest Civic Association; and

WHEREAS, George Malek was also a staunch supporter of the University
at Buffalo Center of the Arts, AIDS Community Services and the Heritage
Centers; and

WHEREAS, The recipient of numerous awards and accolades, George
Malek was bestowed both the Super Volunteer Award and the Exceptional
Services Award by Studio Arena; he also received United Way's
Distinguished Loaned Executive Award, the Town of Amherst Distinguished
Services Award, and the Outstanding Fundraising Award from AIDS
Community Services; and

WHEREAS, George Malek retired to Florida in 2001, where he was a
member of the Palm Beach Round Table, the Norton Museum of Art, Boca
Raton Museum of Art, Hospice of Palm Beach County, and the Palm Beach
Yacht Club; he also volunteered for Palm Beach Dramaworks; and

WHEREAS, George Malek is survived by his wife of 56 years, Lynn; his
daughter, Rebecca; and his sister, Agnes, as well as nieces and nephews;
and

WHEREAS, Armed with a humanistic spirit and imbued with a sense of
compassion, George Malek leaves behind a legacy which will long endure
the passage of time and will remain as a comforting memory to all he
served and befriended; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
mourn the death of George Malek, distinguished citizen and devoted
member of his community; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the family of George Malek.
