COMMENDING Anthony Harmon upon the occasion of his
designation for special recognition by Local 372 NYC
Board of Education Employees on May 3, 2017

WHEREAS, It is the practice of this Legislative Body to take note of
and publicly acknowledge individuals of worthy purpose whose endeavors
have enhanced the quality of education in the great City and State of
New York; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commend Anthony Harmon upon the occasion of his designation for special
recognition by Local 372 NYC Board of Education Employees at its Annual
Scholarship Dinner Dance on Wednesday, May 3, 2017, aboard the
Hornblower Infinity Yacht; and

WHEREAS, Anthony Harmon is truly a whirlwind of energy who turns
multi-tasking into an art form and seems to never get a moment's rest;
as the UFT's Director of Parent and Community Outreach; Director of
Dial-A-Teacher, the union's homework help service; Director of the
Albert Shanker Scholarship Fund; and Chair of the UFT African Heritage
Committee, he is always on the go with an abundance of duties and
challenges to be met; and

WHEREAS, In his capacity as the union's point person on parent and
community outreach, Anthony Harmon acts as the UFT's ambassador to many
grass-roots parent and civic organizations as well as cultural and
religious institutions; he considers every new partnership that he can
help forge between the union and individuals concerned about education
to be worthwhile; and

WHEREAS, Anthony Harmon began his educational career in 1987, at the
School of Graphic Communications Arts where he taught graphic arts and
leadership to students in grades 9-12; during that time, he served as
the school's Coordinator of Student Affairs, Senior Advisor,
School-to-Work Coordinator and yearbook advisor; and

WHEREAS, In 2002, Anthony Harmon joined the UFT staff full-time as
an assistant to the Vice President for Elementary Schools; seven years
later, he held the position of UFT Director of Community and Parent
Outreach; and

WHEREAS, In addition to his work with UFT, Anthony Harmon serves as
the President of the New York Chapter of the A. Philip Randolph
Institute, President of the New York Branch of the NAACP, and a delegate
to the Central Labor Council and the AFL-CIO convention; he is also a
member of the National Board of Directors of the Coalition of Black
Trade Unionists, the New York State United Teachers (NYSUT), and the
Board for the Greater New York Labor and Religion Coalition; and

WHEREAS, The success of the City and State of New York, and of our
nation, depends on organizations such as Local 372 and its members who

have dedicated their lives to nurturing our most precious resource, our
children; and

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those who
enhance the quality of life in their community and have shown a long and
sustained commitment to the maintenance of high standards in their
profession, certainly have earned the recognition and applause of all
the citizens of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Anthony Harmon upon the occasion of his designation for special
recognition by Local 372 NYC Board of Education Employees on May 3,
2017; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Anthony Harmon.
