HONORING Andrea Nilon upon the occasion of being
named a 2017 Orange County Woman of Achievement

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and
pay tribute to those women of achievement within the Empire State who
have made strong contributions to their communities and who inspire
others through their model citizenship; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Andrea Nilon upon the occasion of being named a 2017 Orange County Woman
of Achievement by the Girl Scouts Heart of the Hudson and the YWCA
Orange County to be recognized at its 25th Anniversary Celebration on
Wednesday, May 10, 2017, at Anthony's Pier 9, New Windsor, New York; and

WHEREAS, Andrea Nilon moved to Orange County in the 1970s, during
which time she began making community connections; she quickly became
involved in Girl Scouts as a Brownie leader, an organization which
ignited her passion for volunteerism; and

WHEREAS, As a single mother, Andrea Nilon began working part-time
with the Town of Crawford; this opportunity opened the door to a
position with the Town of Wallkill, which ultimately led to her
illustrious 31 year career as the sole assessor in the Village of
Chester; and

WHEREAS, Andrea Nilon has a true passion for local government and
currently serves as Sole Assessor with the Town of Hamptonburgh; and

WHEREAS, Andrea Nilon has been a member of the Sarah Wells Girl
Scout Council since 1976; she served as Board President for four years
in the 1990s, during the merger which created Girl Scouts Heart of the
Hudson; and

WHEREAS, With a steadfast and unwavering commitment to her
community, Andrea Nilon is a Board Member for the YWCA of Orange County;
she has volunteered with Cornell Cooperative Extension for six years,
three of which she served as President and was instrumental in the
success of the campaign for the Education Center and 4-H Park in Mount
Hope; and

WHEREAS, In addition, she has worked with such groups as the
Citizens Foundation where she serves as membership chair of the Pathways
Committee charged with the completion of Heritage Trail; she has also
served on the Board of the Friends of Hill Hold and Brick House Museum,
planning events such as wine tasting or Herb Day; and

WHEREAS, Andrea Nilon also spent 15 years with the Orange County
Parks Department, during which time she saw the seeds of the Arboretum
bloom into the gem that it is today; and

WHEREAS, With her throughout have been her partner, Rick Hubner, and
five children as well as six grandchildren, all of whom feel privileged
to be a part of her life and rejoice in her achievements; and

WHEREAS, This Legislative Body recognizes that New York State is the
home to countless women who are strong and colorful threads, vital to
the fabric of our rich heritage, who have contributed, and continue to
add to the advancement of our culture through their traditional and
non-traditional roles in society; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Andrea Nilon upon the occasion of being named a 2017 Orange County
Woman of Achievement; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Andrea Nilon.
