HONORING Susan L. Miller upon the occasion of her
designation as recipient of the 2017 Harry and Sandy
Chapin Arts and Humanities Award by the Huntington
Arts Council

WHEREAS, It is incumbent upon the people of the State of New York to
recognize and acknowledge those within our midst who have made
significant contributions to the quality of life therein; and

WHEREAS, From time to time, this Legislative Body takes note of
certain extraordinary individuals it wishes to recognize for their
valued contributions to the success and progress of society and publicly
acknowledge their endeavors which have enhanced the basic humanity among
us all; and

WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Susan L.
Miller upon the occasion of her designation as recipient of the 2017
Harry and Sandy Chapin Arts and Humanities Award by the Huntington Arts
Council, to be celebrated at its Back to the 60's Event on Thursday,
June 8, 2017, at the Larkfield in East Northport, New York; and

WHEREAS, The Huntington Arts Council provides educational
programming while nurturing and preserving art and culture on Long
Island; in 2016, they reached over one million people through their
numerous events including the Summer Arts Festival, Arts in Education
and Exhibitions at our Gallery; and

WHEREAS, Susan L. Miller is a long-serving member of the Arts
Council Board, who has made a positive difference for Long Islanders
through community service, philanthropy and as a champion of the arts;
and

WHEREAS, After moving to the Town of Huntington in 1984, Susan L.
Miller started a lifetime of giving back to the community as Chair of
the First Annual Harry Chapin Humanitarian Award Dinner in 1991; she
also held this position during the 2015 and 2016 events, raising funds
for Long Island Cares, The Harry Chapin Food Bank; and

WHEREAS, In addition, Susan L. Miller has been a member of the Board
of Directors of Long Island Cares since 1991, and the Huntington Arts
Council Board of Directors in 2002, where she remained active until
serving out her term limits in 2016; in this capacity, she served on the
Board Advancement, Fundraising and Exhibition committees; and

WHEREAS, For her many years of dedicated service to her community,
Susan L. Miller was the recipient of numerous awards and accolades,
including the 1999 Long Island Center for Business and Professional
Women Community Service Award, the 2000 LICBP Award, and the 2009 Clark
Gilles Hope for Kids' Award; and

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those who
enhance the well-being and vitality of their community and have shown a
long and sustained commitment to excellence certainly have earned the

recognition and applause of all the citizens of this great Empire State;
now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Susan L. Miller upon the occasion of her designation as recipient
of the 2017 Harry and Sandy Chapin Arts and Humanities Award by the
Huntington Arts Council; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Susan L. Miller.
