HONORING Thomas Tyrell upon the occasion of his
designation as recipient of the 2017 Third Age
Achievement Award in Business by Senior Services of
Albany

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and
applaud the leaders of commerce and industry whose accomplishments
contribute to the economic health and prosperity of the communities of
the State of New York and to the quality of life of its people; and

WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Thomas
Tyrell upon the occasion of his designation as recipient of the 2017
Third Age Achievement Award in Business by Senior Services of Albany, to
be celebrated at its 21st Annual Third Age Achievement Awards Luncheon
on Friday, May 19, 2017, at Wolfert's Roost Country Club, Albany, New
York; and

WHEREAS, Each year, this auspicious event recognizes the
contributions that area residents and professionals have made in their
communities during the Third Age of their lives; Thomas Tyrell will
receive this award for his valuable achievements and devoted service to
his community after the age of 60; and

WHEREAS, Thomas Tyrell serves as the Vice President of Rose &
Kiernan, Inc.; and

WHEREAS, Rose & Kiernan was established in Albany, New York, in 1869
by Rufus Rose; upon his retirement, he was succeeded by his son,
William; Peter D. Kiernan entered the agency in 1901, as a partner and
the agency became Rose & Kiernan; and

WHEREAS, The firm was incorporated in 1914, and for the next 60
years was managed by Peter D. Kiernan and his son, Peter D. Kiernan,
Jr.; and

WHEREAS, In 1974, Peter Kiernan, Jr. left the agency to assume the
presidency of an Albany-based bank holding company; the move
necessitated his divesting himself of his interest in the business,
which resulted in the sale of the agency to the employees on May 8,
1974; and

WHEREAS, Luke J. Henry, a long-time employee, was elected the
agency's new president, and in October of 1974, the management
officially changed hands, and Rose & Kiernan, Inc. became completely
owned and operated by its employees; and

WHEREAS, In 1987, building on the success of its employee ownership,
the company formed the Rose & Kiernan, Inc. Employee Stock Ownership
Plan (ESOP), a decision designed to perpetuate the foundation of the
agency by creating employee programs aimed at keeping families together,
as well as cradle to grave services and total wrap-around services under
one roof; and

WHEREAS, Today, the success of Rose & Kiernan, Inc. is in direct
correlation to the efforts of Thomas Tyrell, whose involvement is, and
always has been, characterized by an impressive commitment, an unbridled
enthusiasm, and an uncompromising standard of excellence in all
endeavors on behalf of the agency and the community it serves; and

WHEREAS, Throughout the entire period of his community service, a
period of constructive involvement, Thomas Tyrell has stood constant in
dignity, good grace and humor; and

WHEREAS, With his proven business leadership abilities and his
evident dedication to his community, Thomas Tyrell is the quintessential
selection for this prestigious award; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Thomas Tyrell upon the occasion of his designation as recipient of
the 2017 Third Age Achievement Award in Business by Senior Services of
Albany; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Thomas Tyrell.
