COMMEMORATING the 150th Anniversary of Brooklyn
Community Services

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to commend those
illustrious organizations within the State of New York whose focus and
intent have made a substantial impact on the quality of life in their
communities; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate the 150th Anniversary of Brooklyn Community Services; and

WHEREAS, Brooklyn Community Services was founded in 1866, through
the creation of Brooklyn Children's Aid Society; the organization has
since consolidated with the Sheltering Arms Nursery, founded in 1870,
the Brooklyn Bureau of Charities, founded in 1878, and the Union of
Christian Work, founded in 1866; and

WHEREAS, Brooklyn Community Services is one of the oldest, not-for
profit, nonsectarian social service providers in New York City, and one
of the largest in Brooklyn; and

WHEREAS, Since its inception, Brooklyn Community Services has set
out to build a better Brooklyn by helping children and youth reach their
full potential, strengthening families, and fostering self-sufficiency
in adults; and

WHEREAS, Over the years Brooklyn Community Services have offered
countless families, youth, and handicapped a variety of job training and
placement opportunities, housing, health services, legal aid, and other
forms of aid used to enrich the people of Brooklyn; and

WHEREAS, Brooklyn Community Services continues to offer its
communities a variety of social services including vocational training
and job placement; social support and mental health services for the
disabled; and child welfare and family support services such as foster
care prevention, homemaker services, and day care services; and

WHEREAS, Currently, Brooklyn Community Services serves over 13,000
children, families, and individuals with developmental disabilities,
exhibiting the true definition of community service; and

WHEREAS, For 150 years, the Brooklyn Community Services has remained
committed to excellence, diversity, integrity, and compassion of the
human spirit; this organization continues to exude dedication to the
people of Brooklyn, providing everyone with the opportunity to learn,
grow and give back; and

WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an
organization for the benefit of others which the individuals at Brooklyn
Community Services have displayed throughout their lives; and

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when
organizations of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our
attention, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens
of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 150th Anniversary of Brooklyn Community Services; and be
it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the Brooklyn Community Services.
