MOURNING the death of Caprice Antonia Alves, Ed.
D., dedicated educator, distinguished citizen and
devoted member of her community

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
citizens of the State of New York whose lifework and civic endeavor
served to enhance the quality of life in their communities and the great
State of New York; and

WHEREAS, Caprice Antonia Alves of Harlem, New York, died on April
11, 2017, at the age of 49; and

WHEREAS, Caprice Antonia Alves was born on March 3, 1968, to Wallace
and Isabelle Alves in Brooklyn, New York; the family then relocated to
Staten Island, New York, where her parents encouraged her to be true to
herself; and

WHEREAS, In 1999, Caprice A. Alves earned her Bachelor of Arts
degree in Social Sciences from the College of New Rochelle; after
graduation, she began her career in New York City's Human Resource
Department (HRA) as a clerical aide; she quickly rose through the ranks,
attaining the position of supervisor; and

WHEREAS, While she was working at HRA, Caprice A. Alves obtained her
master's degree in Urban Affairs/Sociology at CUNY Queens College; in
2003, she joined the staff at the College of New Rochelle as an adjunct
professor; and

WHEREAS, After 15 years of dedicated service to the HRA, Caprice A.
Alves pursued a career in higher education, teaching at numerous
colleges throughout New York and New Jersey including SUNY Old Westbury
and Rutgers University; and

WHEREAS, Determined to remain connected to her students, and to
enhance her teaching style, Caprice A. Alves audited classes at
Princeton University in 2009; and

WHEREAS, In 2006, Caprice A. Alves entered into the world of
politics when a friend decided to run for an elected position; she
hosted various political events and designed special programs to assist
senior residents; and

WHEREAS, Dedicated to her community, Caprice A. Alves was elected to
the title of Vice President of her block association; in this capacity,
she established a block association coalition consisting of four
associations in Harlem; and

WHEREAS, On January 13, 2014, Caprice A. Alves earned her Doctor of
Education degree in Executive Leadership/Social Justice from St. John
Fisher College; she conducted her doctoral on a study of experiences of
dissatisfaction with legal services in Manhattan, and the potential for
dissatisfaction/satisfaction with legal services; and

WHEREAS, With her compiled data, Caprice A. Alves' dissertation was
entitled "An Analysis of the Perceptions of the Legal Profession through
the Eyes of Dissatisfied Consumers of Legal Services in Manhattan, New
York: An Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis"; and

WHEREAS, Caprice A. Alves devoted her life to people in need who
could not advocate for themselves; in February of 2017, she ran for the
vacant New York City Council District No. 9 seat; and

WHEREAS, Predeceased by her father, Wallace Alves, Caprice A. Alves
is survived by her mother, Isabelle Alves; three sisters, Dorice Alves,
Wallis Alves, and Joe-Lyn Alves; one niece, Shanna Rae Alves; three
nephews, Shango Alves, Robert Craigwell, and Nicholas Adenekan; and
numerous relatives and friends; and

WHEREAS, Armed with a humanistic spirit and imbued with a sense of
compassion, Caprice A. Alves leaves behind a legacy which will long
endure the passage of time and will remain as a comforting memory to all
she served and befriended; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
mourn the death of Caprice Antonia Alves, Ed. D., dedicated educator,
distinguished citizen and devoted member of her community; and be it
further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the family of Caprice Antonia Alves.
