COMMEMORATING the 30th Anniversary of the Lower
East Side Ecology Center

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize the
achievements of those organizations that substantially contribute to the
vitality and well-being of their communities and this great Empire
State; and

WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to commemorate the
30th Anniversary of the Lower East Side Ecology Center in Lower
Manhattan; and

WHEREAS, The Lower East Side Ecology Center (LESEC) is a nonprofit
organization founded in 1987 with the goal to achieve a more sustainable
New York City; and

WHEREAS, LESEC was among the first organizations in New York City to
have community-based recycling and composting programs; and

WHEREAS, LESEC has worked to increase community awareness and
involvement among youth and adults through environmental education
programs, including water quality testing and urban ecology; and

WHEREAS, Since 1990, LESEC has collected over 14,000 pounds of waste
per week to turn into finished compost and potting soil; and

WHEREAS, Since 2012, LESEC has offered an electronic waste recycling
program to educate the community about the hazards of electronic waste
and to collect unwanted or broken electronics; and

WHEREAS, LESEC partners with local organizations, corporations and
institutions to host volunteer days for cleanup and gardening to
increase community involvement with the environment; and

WHEREAS, It is with great pleasure that this Legislative Body
acknowledges this exceptional organization and its contributions to the
communities of Lower Manhattan, fully confident that it will continue to
serve as it has thus far; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 30th Anniversary of the Lower East Side Ecology Center;
and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the Lower East Side Ecology Center.
