CONGRATULATING Sophie Mistkowski upon the occasion
of celebrating her 100th Birthday
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to commemorate
and recognize certain milestones celebrated by citizens of this great
Empire State; and
WHEREAS, Senior citizens bring a wealth of experience and knowledge
to the increasingly active roles they play in today's society; their
past contributions and future participation are a vital part of, and
valuable asset to, the fabric of community life and activity; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
congratulate Sophie Mistkowski upon the occasion of her 100th Birthday
to be celebrated with friends and family at a Brunch held in her honor
on Sunday, May 21, 2017, at Harbor Bistro in East Hampton, New York; and
WHEREAS, Sophie Mistkowski was born on May 15, 1917, to Polish
immigrants, Teofil and Wladystawa Mistkowski in Water Mill, New York;
and
WHEREAS, Sophie Mistkowski attended school in Water Mill through the
fifth grade; after moving to Southampton, New York, she was a student at
the local school until eighth grade; she then held several odd jobs
until she moved to Jamaica, Queens, at the age of 18 to study at beauty
school; and
WHEREAS, After graduation, Sophie Mistkowski was employed at several
salons until she obtained a long-term position in Valley Stream, New
York; after many years, she returned to her family homestead in Water
Mill to live with her sister and brothers; and
WHEREAS, Sophie Mistkowski founded the Water Mill Beauty Salon and
remained a sole proprietor until her retirement in the late 1980s when
she moved to East Hampton with her brother Vincent; since his death in
1995, Sophie lives alone and remains completely independent, driving
herself to the grocery store every Wednesday morning; and
WHEREAS, A devout Catholic, Sophie Mistkowski was baptized at Sacred
Hearts of Jesus and Mary Roman Catholic Church in Southampton, New York,
and still receives Holy Communion every week through Most Holy Trinity
Parish in East Hampton, New York; and
WHEREAS, A kind and sweet woman, Sophie Mistkowksi has a great sense
of humor and is always the first one to laugh at a good joke; and
WHEREAS, Sophie Mistkowski, with her zest for life, has inspired and
enhanced the lives of her family and friends; and
WHEREAS, This exceptional centenarian has experienced the incredible
joys and sorrows characteristic of and reserved for those with the
stamina and courage to savor a full life; and
WHEREAS, Sophie Mistkowski has enriched the lives of those around
her through her joyous and sincere love for others and through the
quiescent charm and wisdom which comes only from a fullness of years;
and
WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to publicly
recognize those who have reached such a remarkable age and who have
witnessed and celebrated the innovations, cultural developments and
awesome achievements of this country during the last century, while
themselves contributing to the growth and excellence of this great
Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
congratulate Sophie Mistkowski upon the occasion of celebrating her
100th Birthday; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Sophie Mistkowski.
