HONORING Carrie Gorton upon the occasion of being
inducted into the first class of the Section IX
Track and Field Hall of Fame on May 20, 2017

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
outstanding athletes who have distinguished themselves through their
exceptional performance, attaining unprecedented success and the highest
level of personal achievement; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Carrie Gorton upon the occasion of being inducted into the first class
of the Section IX Track and Field Hall of Fame to be celebrated at a
Ceremony on Saturday, May 20, 2017, at Kuhl's Highland House in
Middletown, New York; and

WHEREAS, A 1989 graduate of Roscoe Central School, Carrie Gorton
attended SUNY Brockport where she captured the school's first NCAA title
in the javelin throw at the 1991 Division III Championships; and

WHEREAS, A four-time SUNY Athletic Conference Champion, and
four-time NCAA All-American, she competed in the 1996 United States
Olympic Trials, and the 1997 United States Nationals; and

WHEREAS, This talented athlete also competed in the Empire State
Games, setting the javelin distance mark; she also holds the record for
winning 13 consecutive championship titles over the years; and

WHEREAS, Carrie Gorton has been an inspiration to countless track
and field fans, as well as to the community-at-large, and accordingly
merits recognition and applause for her tremendous passion for the sport
and competitive spirit; and

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when
individuals of such outstanding athletic accomplishments are brought to
our attention, they should be recognized by all the citizens of this
great Empire State; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
congratulate Carrie Gorton upon the occasion of being inducted into the
first class of the Section IX Track and Field Hall of Fame on May 20,
2017; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Carrie Gorton.
