COMMEMORATING the 15th Anniversary of the Hester
Street Collaborative

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize the
achievements of those organizations that substantially contribute to the
vitality and well-being of their communities and this great Empire
State; and

WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to commemorate the
15th Anniversary of Hester Street Collaborative in Lower Manhattan; and

WHEREAS, Leroy Street Studio and the East New York Urban Youth
Corporation co-founded Hester Street Collaborative with a mission to use
collaborative and participatory design to improve the built environment
and enhance open space; and

WHEREAS, Since 2002, Hester Street Collaborative has aimed to unite
local residents and youth to work collaboratively on the design of local
projects to improve public spaces; and

WHEREAS, In partnership with the Lower East Side Waterfront
Alliance, Hester Street Collaborative created the Waterfront on Wheels
series of workshops for the community to share input for open space
along the East River waterfront; and

WHEREAS, Together with the United Neighbors to Revitalize Allen and
Pike coalition, Hester Street Collaborative worked on a redesign of the
Allen and Pike Street Malls that reflected the vision of many
communities from Two Bridges to Chinatown to the Lower East Side for
open space along Allen and Pike Streets from South Street to Houston
Street; and

WHEREAS, Hester Street Collaborative worked with the New York City
Department of Transportation to hold community visioning workshops
resulting in the installation of public art at the South Street Median
on the Lower East Side; and

WHEREAS, Hester Street Collaborative continues to be an important
advocate and partner in the transformation of Pier 42 into a public
park; and

WHEREAS, It is with great pleasure that this Legislative Body
acknowledges this exceptional organization and its contributions to the
communities of Lower Manhattan, fully confident that it will continue to
serve as it has thus far; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 15th Anniversary of Hester Street Collaborative; and be
it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Hester Street Collaborative.
