COMMEMORATING the 50th Anniversary of the South
Street Seaport Museum

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize the
achievements of those organizations that substantially contribute to the
vitality and well-being of their communities and the entire Empire
State; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the South Street Seaport Museum; and

WHEREAS, The South Street Seaport Museum was founded in 1967 by
Peter and Norma Stanford; and

WHEREAS, The group was instrumental in preserving 56 historic
buildings in the seaport area from demolition, as well as procuring four
boats for the museum's exhibits; and

WHEREAS, Today, the South Street Seaport museum is home to five
ships: the 1885 schooner Pioneer; the 1885 Wavertree, one of the last
large sailing ships built from iron; the 1893 fishing schooner Lettie G.
Howard, a National Historic Landmark; the 1907 Lightship Ambrose, which
guided ships safely from the Atlantic Ocean to New York Harbor; and the
wooden tugboat W.O. Decker; and

WHEREAS, In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, which flooded the
South Street Seaport, the South Street Seaport Museum has become a
leading advocate for resiliency protection in Lower Manhattan; and

WHEREAS, The South Street Seaport Museum's 50th Anniversary will be
a yearlong celebration including new exhibitions, artistic and musical
performances, lectures, book talks, and walking tours of the Seaport;
and

WHEREAS, Under the leadership of Captain Jonathan Boulware, the
South Street Seaport Museum continues to educate New Yorkers and
visitors alike on New York's maritime history; and

WHEREAS, This auspicious occasion presents a unique opportunity for
this Legislative Body to recognize and pay tribute to the South Street
Seaport Museum; and

WHEREAS, It is with great pleasure that this Legislative Body
acknowledges this exceptional organization and its valuable
contributions to the community, fully confident that it will continue to
enjoy the successes it has experienced thus far; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the South Street Seaport Museum; and
be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Captain Jonathan Boulware, South Street Seaport Museum.
