Senate Resolution No. 2357

HONORING the Croton-on-Hudson Fire Department upon
the occasion of its 125th Anniversary
WHEREAS, The State of New York takes great pride in acknowledging
the significant milestones in the distinguished histories of its
esteemed entities; and
WHEREAS, The Croton-on-Hudson Fire Department is celebrating its
125th Anniversary in 2017; and
WHEREAS, The Croton-on-Hudson Fire Department was formed as the
Washington Hand Engine Company on February 12, 1892, following a
devastating fire in Croton Landing that overwhelmed the "bucket brigade"
which had been in place at the time; and
WHEREAS, The department was quickly joined by the Independent Fire
Company and the Columbian Hook and Ladder Company; the three companies
were drawn together by a new village government when the Village of
Croton-on-Hudson was incorporated in 1898; and
WHEREAS, The Emergency Relief Squad was formed on September 20, 1934
to provide crowd control and fire scene security, and, eventually,
rescue and ambulance service; while still providing rescue services, the
department no longer provides ambulance services; and
WHEREAS, Following the merger of Croton and Harmon, Harmon Engine
Company No. 3 was formed in 1922; and
WHEREAS, The Croton-on-Hudson Fire Department began its youth
program, Explorer Post 2089, now known as the Croton Junior Fire
Department, in the early 1980's; the organization included young girls,
leading to a rise in women wanting to join the department; and
WHEREAS, During the 1990s, the Croton-on-Hudson Fire Department
introduced Thermal Imaging Cameras, increased training requirements, and
formed Firefighter Assist & Search Teams; and
WHEREAS, The Croton-on-Hudson Fire Department has a long and
distinguished history of serving the community; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor the Croton-on-Hudson Fire Department upon its 125th Anniversary;
and be it further
RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the Croton-on-Hudson Fire Department.
