CONGRATULATING Annie Henry upon the occasion of
celebrating her 100th Birthday
WHEREAS, Senior citizens bring a wealth of experience and knowledge
to the increasingly active roles they play in today's society; their
past contributions and future participation are a vital part of, and
valuable asset to, the fabric of community life and activity; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to congratulate Annie
Henry upon the occasion of celebrating her 100th Birthday on Saturday,
August 5, 2017, during the 90th Annual Gordon Heights Family Day; and
WHEREAS, This exceptional centenarian, with her zest for life, has
inspired and enhanced the lives of her family and friends; she has
experienced the incredible joys and sorrows characteristic of and
reserved for those with the stamina and courage to savor a full life;
and
WHEREAS, Annie Henry was born on August 2, 1917, in Talladega,
Alabama; despite the obstacles of the Jim Crow south, this phenomenal
woman not only completed high school, but went on to Talladega College
from 1936 to 1939, as well as Cortez Peters Business School in 1941; and
WHEREAS, After working as a teacher at Talladega High School in
1940, Annie Henry valiantly served her country as a member of the United
States Women's Army Corps during the Second World War as a technician,
fifth grade; and
WHEREAS, Annie Henry and her husband, Vincent, moved to Gordon
Heights to start their life together in 1946; and
WHEREAS, A true asset to her community, Annie Henry is the longest
serving employee of the Gordon Heights Fire District, where she gave 31
years of dedicated service as its secretary treasurer; and
WHEREAS, With a steadfast and unwavering commitment to Gordon
Heights, Annie Henry served as a community volunteer for nearly two
decades; she served the Faith Baptist Church as both a Deaconess and
Director of its Afterschool Program, and was a Longwood School District
Food Service employee for 18 years; and
WHEREAS, Today, Annie Henry continues to reside in Gordon Heights
with her beloved daughter, Carmen; and
WHEREAS, This beloved woman has enriched the lives of those around
her through her joyous and sincere love for others and through the
quiescent charm and wisdom which comes only from a fullness of years;
and
WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to publicly
recognize those who have reached such a remarkable age and who have
witnessed and celebrated the innovations, cultural developments and
awesome achievements of this country during the last century, while
themselves contributing to the growth and excellence of this great
Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
congratulate Annie Henry upon the occasion of her 100th Birthday; and be
it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Annie Henry.
