HONORING John Maurycy upon the occasion of his
induction into the Schenectady City School District
Athletic Hall of Fame on September 11, 2017

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
outstanding athletes who have distinguished themselves through their
exceptional performance, attaining unprecedented success and the highest
level of personal achievement; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
John Maurycy upon the occasion of his induction into the Schenectady
City School District Athletic Hall of Fame, to be celebrated at its 20th
Annual Hall of Fame and Reunion Dinner on Monday, September 11, 2017, at
Proctor's Theatre in Schenectady, New York; and

WHEREAS, John Maurycy is an esteemed graduate of Mont Pleasant High
School, where he distinguished himself by his many notable achievements
in golf and basketball, holding numerous high school records; and

WHEREAS, John Maurycy played golf at Mont Pleasant High School for
Athletic Hall of Famer Sig Makofski, and basketball for Hall of Famer
Ray Vacca; during the 1954-1955 basketball season, he was recognized as
the school's second leading scorer; and

WHEREAS, At the young age of 16, John Maurycy won the Schenectady
County Amateur Golf Championship; he finished in 8th place at the Hearst
National Junior Tournament in Baltimore, Maryland; and

WHEREAS, John Maurycy was a key member of the Mont Pleasant Golf
Team, helping them capture the 1954 New York State High School Golf
Championship; and

WHEREAS, In 1960, John Maurycy won the Eastern New York Golf
Championship at the Shaker Ridge Country Club; at the age of 21, he
became a professional golf player; and

WHEREAS, This exceptional athlete qualified for three consecutive
U.S. Opens from 1963-1965, missing the cut by two strokes in 1963, and
one stroke in 1964; and

WHEREAS, John Maurycy played in the PGA Championship in West Palm
Beach, Florida, and competed on the PGA Tour from 1966-67; by qualifying
at Oklahoma City, he made several cuts on the PGA Tour; and

WHEREAS, Throughout his career, John Maurycy held course records at
Mt. Anthony Country Club in 1963, Schuyler Meadows Club in 1963, the
Mohawk Golf Club in 1964, and the Walhalla Country Club; and

WHEREAS, In both 1970 and 1979, John Maurycy captured the
Northeastern New York PGA Championship; he also won numerous
Northeastern New York tournaments; and

WHEREAS, Well-liked and admired by everyone, John Maurycy holds the
position of head pro at the Walhalla Country Club and the Mohawk Golf
Club; and

WHEREAS, In addition to being inducted into the Schenectady City
School District Athletic Hall of Fame, he is a member of the
Northeastern New York PGA Hall of Fame; and

WHEREAS, This auspicious occasion presents a unique opportunity for
this Legislative Body to recognize and pay tribute to John Maurycy; and

WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is moved to honor John Maurycy for
his extraordinary athletic accomplishments which are a tribute to his
skill, dedication and commitment; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations with
praise and pride to honor John Maurycy upon the occasion of his
induction into the Schenectady City School District Athletic Hall of
Fame; and be it further

RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to John Maurycy, and the Schenectady City School District
Athletic Hall of Fame.
