CONGRATULATING Carl E. Haynes, Ph.D., upon the
occasion of his retirement after 48 years of
distinguished service to Tompkins Cortland Community
College on August 31, 2017
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body seeks to acknowledge those
individuals whose professional lives and civic endeavors serve to
enhance the stature of the State of New York; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
congratulate Carl E. Haynes, Ph.D., upon the occasion of his retirement
after 48 years of distinguished service to Tompkins Cortland Community
College on Thursday, August 31, 2017; and
WHEREAS, Carl E. Haynes earned his bachelor's degree from Rochester
Institute of Technology; he furthered his education by obtaining both a
Master of Science and Master of Business Administration from Syracuse
University, and a Ph.D. from Cornell University; and
WHEREAS, During Tompkins Cortland Community College's second year of
operation, Carl E. Haynes began his long career as a member of the
business faculty in 1969; in 1994, he was selected as the third
President of the college; and
WHEREAS, Throughout his tenure at Tompkins Cortland Community
College, Carl E. Haynes oversaw tremendous growth; enrollment at the
College has nearly doubled and major construction projects have included
a new student center, athletics facilities, several residence halls, as
well as a solar farm on campus; and
WHEREAS, Not only has Carl E. Haynes led important advances at the
college, but was instrumental in advancing the surrounding areas as
well; the College created a farm on campus and subsequently, opened
Coltivare, a restaurant which supports its Farm to Bistro initiative
which includes degrees in culinary arts and sustainable farming and food
systems; the College has also reaffirmed its commitment to the community
with new extension centers in Cortland and Ithaca; and
WHEREAS, Under his luminous leadership, Tompkins Cortland Community
College has partnered with more than 50 school districts in the state to
offer college credits in their high schools, and has become a leader in
international education by bringing students from all over the world to
the campus while providing opportunities for students from the College
to study abroad; and
WHEREAS, For his service and contributions to Tompkins Cortland
Community College, Carl E. Haynes received the 2015 Northeast Regional
Chief Executive Officer Award by the Association of Community Colleges;
and
WHEREAS, For over two decades, Carl E. Haynes has been a tower of
strength and support for Tompkins Cortland Community College and its
community; and
WHEREAS, As the longest serving President of Tompkins Cortland
Community College, Carl E. Haynes has created and fostered opportunities
for his students, faculty and staff, ensuring pathways for their
educational success as well as their personal and professional growth;
and
WHEREAS, Carl E. Haynes's quest for excellence is well-known; he
attributes much of his success to the dedicated ethical team of
educators, supportive friends, and wonderful enthusiastic students; and
WHEREAS, Carl E. Haynes has clearly had an enduring impact on the
students of Tompkins Cortland Community College, as well as on the
community-at-large, and accordingly merits recognition and applause for
his impressive dedication to others; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to commend the
efforts of those individuals who work to support our proud traditions of
institutions of higher education by providing their skills and talents
to our colleges; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor upon the occasion of his retirement after 48 years of
distinguished service to Tompkins Cortland Community College, and to
wish him continued success in all his future endeavors; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Carl E. Haynes, Ph.D.
