Senate Resolution No. 2696

HONORING the Hawthorne American Legion Post for
hosting a Medal of Honor Day commemoration at the
Kensico Dam Plaza on July 27, 2017
WHEREAS, The State of New York takes great pride in recognizing its
esteemed military who have distinguished themselves in service to their
country; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor the
Hawthorne American Legion Post for hosting a Medal of Honor Day
commemoration at the Kensico Dam Plaza on July 27, 2017; and
WHEREAS, The Medal of Honor, the United States' highest military
honor, was created in 1861; and
WHEREAS, The Medal of Honor is awarded only to U.S. military
personnel, by the President of the U.S. in the name of Congress, for
personal acts of valor above and beyond the call of duty; and
WHEREAS, The Medal of Honor has a distinct version for the Army, the
Navy, and the Air Force; members of the Marine Corps and the Coast Guard
receive the Navy version; and
WHEREAS, The first Medals of Honor were awarded on March 25, 1863,
to six members of "Andrews Raiders" for their volunteering and
participation during an American Civil War raid in April of 1862; since
then, over 3,400 Medals of Honor have been awarded; and
WHEREAS, It is appropriate to honor these heroic men and women
during their own day of recognition; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor the Hawthorne American Legion Post for hosting a Medal of Honor
Day commemoration at the Kensico Dam Plaza on July 27, 2017; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the Hawthorne American Legion Post.
