COMMEMORATING the 100th Anniversary of the New
York State Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize that
the quality and character of life in the communities across New York
State are reflective of the concerned and dedicated efforts of those
organizations and individuals that are devoted to the welfare of the
community and its citizenry; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the New York State Academy of
Nutrition and Dietetics; this momentous occasion was recognized at its
Annual Meeting and Expo & Centennial Celebration on May 10-12, 2017, in
Lake Placid, New York; and
WHEREAS, In 1899, leaders in the home economics movement began
meeting in Lake Placid, New York, for a series of annual conferences to
discuss the problems, progress and future of this developing field;
among the women was a small group interested in hospital dietetics and
they began meeting separately for sessions concerning the training and
duties of the hospital dietician; and
WHEREAS, The Lake Placid Conferences culminated in the founding of
the American Home Economics Association, and in November of 1916, the
dieticians broke off into the first official organized group of
dieticians, the New York Association of Dieticians; and
WHEREAS, Thereafter, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics was
founded at a meeting in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1917, and was dedicated to
helping the government conserve food and improve the public's health and
nutrition during World War I; the organization was conceptualized with a
constitution and bylaws as the American Dietetic Association; the name
change came many years later; and
WHEREAS, Today, the New York State Academy of Nutrition and
Dietetics (NYSAND) is an organization of nutrition professionals,
residing, working or attending school in New York State; and
WHEREAS, Affiliated with the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics,
NYSAND has more than 5,000 members throughout ten district associations
within NYSAND, covering all regions of the state, from Long Island to
Plattsburgh, to the far reaches of the Southern Tier; and
WHEREAS, Members of the New York State Academy of Nutrition and
Dietetics include Registered Dietitians (RD) and Dietetic Technicians,
Registered (DTR); many of its members also hold New York State
Certification as Dietitian/Nutritionist (CDN); and
WHEREAS, Over its distinguished 100 year history, the New York State
Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics has demonstrated continuous service
to the residents and communities which it serves; and
WHEREAS, The success of the New York State Academy of Nutrition and
Dietetics is in direct correlation to the efforts of its members, whose
involvement is, and always has been, characterized by an impressive
commitment, an unbridled enthusiasm, and an uncompromising standard of
excellence in all endeavors on behalf of the organization and the
community it serves; and
WHEREAS, This auspicious occasion presents an opportunity for this
Legislative Body to recognize and pay tribute to the New York State
Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when
organizations of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our
attention, they should be recognized and applauded by all the citizens
of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the New York State Academy of
Nutrition and Dietetics; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the New York State Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
