COMMEMORATING Brooklyn, New York's, 4th Annual
International Day of Friendship on August 6, 2017
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body, in keeping with
its time-honored traditions, to recognize and pay tribute to those
organizations which foster ethnic pride and enhance the profile of
cultural diversity which strengthens the fabric of the communities of
New York State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate Brooklyn, New York's, 4th Annual International Day of
Friendship on Sunday, August 6, 2017 at Brooklyn Borough Hall and
Columbus Park in Downtown Brooklyn, New York; and
WHEREAS, Brooklyn Borough President, Eric L. Adams, has diligently
worked to build One Brooklyn by bridging gaps between cultures and
forging bonds of friendship which connect people in every community
throughout the world, while promoting worldwide peace and unity in
Brooklyn and beyond; and
WHEREAS, Brooklyn's International Day of Friendship will feature a
colorful Unity Parade of Flags consisting of young people and delegates
carrying their countries' flags, a showcase of traditional attire,
cultural performances, international cuisine and much more; and
WHEREAS, People from each country will then stand and hold hands,
with youth from all neighborhoods across Brooklyn forming a human chain
around Brooklyn Borough Hall; as parade marchers stand with their
country's Delegate there will be a ceremonial handing off of the flag to
show the significance of bridging the gap in generations and throughout
the world's people; and
WHEREAS, Culture is a cornerstone of national identity and pride;
International Day of Friendship will highlight performances specific to
continental regions to expose Brooklynites to the rich diversity found
in their backyard; and
WHEREAS, Various organizations will have the opportunity to
highlight their countries' culture through reading, dances or music; and
WHEREAS, In addition, people can go to the Global Village and sample
delicious food from around the world; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those who
enhance the well-being and vitality of their community and have shown a
long and sustained commitment to excellence certainly have earned the
recognition and applause of all the citizens of this great Empire State;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate Brooklyn, New York's, 4th Annual International Day of
Friendship on August 6, 2017; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Eric L. Adams, President, Brooklyn Borough.
