COMMEMORATING the 40th Anniversary of Stony Brook
University's WUSB on June 25, 2017
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that the quality
and character of life in this great Empire State is indelibly enriched
by the faithful and untiring efforts of those individuals who have
helped shape the history of broadcasting in their area; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate the 40th Anniversary of Stony Brook University's WUSB; this
momentous occasion was celebrated at an Awards Recognition and
Anniversary Luncheon on Sunday, June 25, 2017, at the Three Village Inn,
Stony Brook, New York; and
WHEREAS, WUSB is a noncommercial station located in Stony Brook, New
York, broadcasting on 90.1 MHz and 107.3 MHz on the FM dial; the station
is staffed by more than 150 volunteers who devote their time and energy
for the love of music and free-form radio; and
WHEREAS, WUSB's primary broadcast coverage area reaches from Western
Nassau County to Suffolk's East End and southern Connecticut, with
nearly 40,000 off-campus listeners tuning into its unique and live
programming each week; and
WHEREAS, The station began in 1962, as a carrier current station,
broadcasting only within the confines of the then-new Stony Brook campus
on 820 kHz on the AM band; during this time, WUSB was an integral part
of Stony Brook University's once lively concert scene, which brought
such bands and acts as Simon and Garfunkel, Thelonious Monk, The
Grateful Dead, Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, Jefferson Airplane, Arlo
Guthrie, Joni Mitchell, Janis Joplin, the Allman Brothers Band, Pink
Floyd, Van Morrison, The Who, Jethro Tull, Cat Stevens, Hot Tuna,
Santana, Stony Brook's own Blue Oyster Cult, the Beach Boys, Frank
Zappa, Billy Joel, Bob Marley and the Wailers, Jerry Garcia and more;
and
WHEREAS, WUSB has been broadcasting on the FM band since June 27,
1977, and from its current location in Bald Hill since 1995; and
WHEREAS, From 1977 to 1995, the station's transmitter and antenna
were located on campus, atop the Graduate Chemistry building, prior to
which the station broadcast only to the Stony Brook University campus
via carrier current on 820 kHz on the AM band; and
WHEREAS, WUSB began streaming at www.wusb.fm in 2008, and in 2017,
an additional frequency was approved by the FCC on 107.3fm; WUSB's brand
new studios were built in the West Side Dining Building, with its main
advising office in the Student Activities Center; and
WHEREAS, Since its inception, WUSB has provided free-form
programming, encompassing a variety of different styles and genres,
ranging from jazz and classical, to punk rock, reggae and world music,
and many genres in between; and
WHEREAS, Additionally, the station has aired a large variety of
public affairs programs, ethnic programs, and programming of interest to
students; and
WHEREAS, For the past 10 years, WUSB has been under the able
leadership of Isobel Breheny-Schafer, an Alumni of the Stony Brook
University College of Business; as General Manager, she advises the
radio station student directors and student media programs on campus;
and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body would like to extend its highest
commendation to WUSB in recognition of its history of achievement,
innovation and service to its community and the State of New York,
continuously striving to meet the needs of its listeners through
entertainment and enlightenment; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 40th Anniversary of Stony Brook University radio station
WUSB on June 25, 2017; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to WUSB, Stony Brook University.
