Senate Resolution No. 3084

HONORING Walter C. Morris posthumously upon the
occasion of his designation as recipient of a
Liberty Medal, the highest honor bestowed upon an
individual by the New York State Senate
WHEREAS, It is incumbent upon the people of the State of New York to
recognize and acknowledge those within our midst who have made
significant contributions to the quality of life therein; and
WHEREAS, Members of the Armed Services from the State of New York,
who have served so valiantly and honorably in wars in which this
country's freedom was at stake, as well as in the preservation of peace
in peacetime, deserve a special salute from this Legislative Body; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Walter C.
Morris posthumously upon the occasion of his designation as recipient of
a Liberty Medal, the highest honor bestowed upon an individual by the
New York State Senate, to be presented at the Saratoga County
Honor-A-Deceased-Veteran Ceremony; and
WHEREAS, The New York State Senate Liberty Medal was established by
resolution and is awarded to individuals who have merited special
commendation for exceptional, heroic, or humanitarian acts on behalf of
their fellow New Yorkers; and
WHEREAS, Born on August 21, 1937, to John S. and Evelyn (Quinon)
Morris in Ghent, New York, Walter C. Morris attended Philmont Public
School before working as a construction machine operator; and
WHEREAS, Walter C. Morris entered the United States Army on August
4, 1956, in Albany, New York; upon successfully completing basic
training at Fort Dix, he was trained as a Bridge Specialist; and
WHEREAS, In addition, Walter C. Morris received military courses in
Chemical, Biological and Radiological Training, Survival/Escape and
Evasion, Military Justice and Code of Conduct, earning the rank of
Specialist 4; and
WHEREAS, Walter C. Morris was then assigned to Schwetzingen,
Germany, where he met and married his wife Doris Frank in Mannheim on
September 26, 1957; and
WHEREAS, After his tour of duty, this brave soldier was assigned to
Headquarters and Service Co., 91st Combat Engineers Battalion, Ft.
Belvoir, Virginia, as a Bridge Specialist with the United States Army
Corps of Engineers; and
WHEREAS, Walter C. Morris was then transferred to the United States
Army Reserves with II US Army Corps of Engineers and was honorably
discharged on August 31, 1962; and
WHEREAS, Upon the completion of his valiant military service, Walter
C. Morris worked for Sherman's Cement Plant, then as a tractor trailer
driver for Harder's Express, and finally as a Columbia County Veteran's
Van Driver until his retirement in 2012; and
WHEREAS, A true asset to his community, Walter C. Morris was a shop
steward for the Teamsters Union Local No. 294, a member of the American
Legion, Korean War Veterans and a volunteer at the VA hospital; and
WHEREAS, Walter C. Morris died on April 29, 2014, at the age of 76;
he is survived by his daughter, Susan; a sister, Dorothy; a brother,
Alfred; and two grandchildren, Andrew and Olivia; and
WHEREAS, Residents of this great State must never forget the courage
with which these men and women served their country, and must recognize
that no greater debt is owed than that owed to those who gave their
lives for their beloved Nation and to those who continue to be missing
in action; and
WHEREAS, Having exhibited his patriotism both at home and abroad,
Walter C. Morris demonstrated his love for his country and merits
forevermore, the highest respect of his State and Nation; and
WHEREAS, Our Nation's veterans deserve to be recognized, commended
and thanked by the people of the State of New York for their service and
for their dedication to their communities, their State and their Nation;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Walter C. Morris posthumously upon the occasion of his designation
as recipient of a Liberty Medal, the highest honor bestowed upon an
individual by the New York State Senate; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the family of Walter C. Morris.
