HONORING Arthur L. DeVoe posthumously upon the
occasion of his designation as recipient of a
Liberty Medal, the highest honor bestowed upon an
individual by the New York State Senate

WHEREAS, It is incumbent upon the people of the State of New York to
recognize and acknowledge those within our midst who have made
significant contributions to the quality of life therein; and

WHEREAS, Members of the Armed Services from the State of New York,
who have served so valiantly and honorably in wars in which this
country's freedom was at stake, as well as in the preservation of peace
in peacetime, deserve a special salute from this Legislative Body; and

WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Arthur L.
DeVoe posthumously upon the occasion of his designation as recipient of
a Liberty Medal, the highest honor bestowed upon an individual by the
New York State Senate; and

WHEREAS, The New York State Senate Liberty Medal was established by
Resolution and is awarded to individuals who have merited special
commendation for exceptional, heroic, or humanitarian acts on behalf of
their fellow New Yorkers; and

WHEREAS, Arthur L. DeVoe, affectionately known as Art, was born on
February 4, 1936, in Troy, New York; he was a member of the first
graduating class of Shenendehowa High School, where he designed the
school's emblem; and

WHEREAS, After attending the University of Maryland, Art DeVoe
entered the United States Army on November 16, 1954, serving with C
Battery 3rd Gunnery Battalion 39th Artillery; and

WHEREAS, This brave soldier served as a cook and spent time in
Germany during the post-World War II Occupation Period in the early
1950s; he was discharged at the rank of Specialist 4th Class on July 28,
1959; and

WHEREAS, For his courageous service, Art DeVoe was awarded the Good
Conduct Medal, Army of Occupation of Germany Medal and the National
Defense Service Medal; and

WHEREAS, Following the completion of his military service, Art DeVoe
spent his illustrious trucking career with White Motor Corp. and Mack
Truck Companies before retiring from McCasland Trucking; and

WHEREAS, A true asset to his community, Art DeVoe was a member of
the Clifton Park/Halfmoon VFW Post No. 1498, having served as past
Commander, Council Commander, District Commander and the Quarter Master;
and

WHEREAS, Art DeVoe was a charter member of the Gerald B.H. Solomon
Saratoga National Cemetery Honor Guard Association, serving as past

Commander and Squadron Leader; he was also a member of the F & AM Star
Lodge of Latham and the Ondawa Lodge in Clifton Park; and

WHEREAS, Active in Scouting, Art DeVoe served as a Scout Master,
Assistant Scout Master, and was a member of the Saratoga County Boy
Scouts of America Executive Committee for more than 30 years; and

WHEREAS, Residents of this great State must never forget the courage
with which these men and women served their country, and must recognize
that no greater debt is owed than that owed to those who gave their
lives for their beloved Nation and to those who continue to be missing
in action; and

WHEREAS, Having exhibited his patriotism both at home and abroad,
Art DeVoe demonstrated his love for his country and merits forevermore,
the highest respect of his State and Nation; and

WHEREAS, Our Nation's veterans deserve to be recognized, commended
and thanked by the people of the State of New York for their service and
for their dedication to their communities, their State and their Nation;
now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Arthur L. DeVoe posthumously upon the occasion of his designation
as recipient of a Liberty Medal, the highest honor bestowed upon an
individual by the New York State Senate; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the family of Arthur L. DeVoe.
