MEMORIALIZING Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to proclaim
June 2018, as Teen Worker Safety Month in the State
of New York

WHEREAS, Having a job can be a valuable part of a teenager's life,
learning and development; and

WHEREAS, Every year, approximately 150,000 teenagers in the United
States are injured on the job, and about 125 teenagers are killed every
year at work, including 29 teens under the age of 20 in New York State
from 2003-2008; and

WHEREAS, The State of New York acknowledges that youth are our most
valuable resource, and we must promote not just job opportunities, but
safe and healthy jobs for youth; and

WHEREAS, This summer, many teens will be heading into summer jobs
and may not be aware of the need for work permits, of potential hazards
on their jobs, or of the labor laws designed to protect youth in the
workplace; and

WHEREAS, Teen Worker Safety Month encourages New York communities to
work together to reduce teen workplace injuries; and

WHEREAS, New York State agencies work to inform employers about the
laws and regulations governing young workers and to provide information
to teen workers about their rights to safe and healthful places of
employment, workplace hazards and the legal restrictions limiting the
types and hours of employment; and

WHEREAS, The New York State Young Workers Safety and Health Project,
representing government agencies, community-based organizations, unions,
teachers' and parent groups, and others is encouraging teens, schools,
parents and employers to learn more about the importance of teen safety
at work; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
memorialize Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to proclaim June 2018, as Teen
Worker Safety Month in the State of New York; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to The Honorable Andrew M. Cuomo, Governor of the State of
New York.
