CONGRATULATING the Republic of Korea upon the
occasion of hosting the 2018 Winter Olympics, and to
wish them a successful and peaceful Olympic games

WHEREAS, It is the practice of this Legislative Body to congratulate
the Republic of Korea upon the occasion of hosting the 2018 Winter
Olympics, and to wish them a successful and peaceful Olympic games; and

WHEREAS, The 2018 Winter Olympics will be held in PyeongChang,
Republic of Korea (South Korea), February 9-25, 2018; and

WHEREAS, The International Olympic Committee selected PyeongChang,
Republic of Korea, on July 6, 2011, to host the XXIII Winter Games over
Munich, Germany and Annecy, France; and

WHEREAS, PyeongChang will present a relatively compact Olympics,
offering New Horizons, a legacy of renewed growth and potential for the
Winter Olympics; and

WHEREAS, The mascot for these Olympics is based on the white tiger;
the logo has its roots in the Hangul language, with the shape formed by
the letters making up the first consonants of the PyeongChang; and

WHEREAS, In addition, the first character in the emblem represents a
gathering place where the three elements of Cheon-heaven, earth and
human-are in harmony; the second character symbolizes snow and ice as
well as the athletes' stellar performances; and

WHEREAS, There will be a total of 102 gold medals awarded at the
2018 Winter Olympics, more than any other Winter Olympics; new events
will include: Snowbird Big Air, Mixed Doubles Curling, Mixed Alpine
Skiing, and Mass Start Men's and Women's Speed Skating; and

WHEREAS, The National Unification Advisory Council is the
constitutional organization, established in accordance with Article 92
of the Constitution of the Republic of Korea and the National
Unification Advisory Council Act (Korea) to advise the President of
South Korea on the formulation of a peaceful unification policy; and

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when esteemed
leaders and their countries of such noble aims and accomplishments are
brought to our attention, they should be celebrated and recognized by
all the citizens of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
congratulate the Republic of Korea upon the occasion of hosting the 2018
Winter Olympics, and to wish them a successful and peaceful Olympic
games; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Moon Jae-in, President of South Korea.
