COMMENDING The Honorable Anthony F. Aloi upon the
occasion of his retirement after 16 years of
distinguished service as an Onondaga County Court
Judge
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and
honor the distinguished careers of those esteemed individuals within our
midst whose lives have been committed to the pursuit of excellence and
who bring great pride to the citizens of our Empire State; and
WHEREAS, The quality and character of life in the Central New York
community has been ably served and uniquely enriched through the
selfless dedication and benevolent concern of Judge Anthony F. Aloi; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commend Judge Anthony F. Aloi upon the occasion of his retirement after
serving 16 years as an Onondaga County Court Judge; and
WHEREAS, Judge Anthony F. Aloi, a lifelong resident of Onondaga
County, graduated from North High School in 1963; he then went on to
complete a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Labor Relations from
LeMoyne College in 1968; and
WHEREAS, In 1971, Judge Anthony F. Aloi earned his Juris Doctor from
the University of Akron School of Law; and
WHEREAS, Judge Anthony F. Aloi began his career as a confidential
law clerk for the Onondaga County Court, and served in this position for
more than 28 years until deciding to run for judge in 2000; and
WHEREAS, Judge Anthony F. Aloi has worked as a private practice
lawyer handling real estate and house closing matters, and was also
previously the chief legal advisor to Onondaga County Court Judges and
appointed Acting Supreme Court Justice; and
WHEREAS, In 2000, Judge Anthony F. Aloi was elected by the voters of
New York State's fifth Judicial District to his seat on the Onondaga
County Court; in 2010, he was re-elected to this esteemed position; and
WHEREAS, During his time as a judge, The Honorable Anthony F. Aloi
handled many high-profile cases and challenging cold cases including
those of Donald Sigsbee, Roland Patnode, George Geddes, and Ronald
Meadow; and
WHEREAS, More recently, Judge Anthony F. Aloi presided over other
high-profile cases, such as the Ryan Lawrence (Baby Maddox) murder case;
and
WHEREAS, During his tenure, Judge Anthony F. Aloi developed a
reputation for being a fair but tough judge; he handled an annual case
load of approximately 400 criminal cases, including integrated domestic
violence cases, as well as lower court appeals involving both criminal
and civil matters; and
WHEREAS, In addition, Judge Anthony F. Aloi has lectured for the New
York State Bar Association and the Onondaga Bar Association, and he
continues to serve as a noted teacher of judges and lawyers regarding
criminal law in the State of New York; in addition, he has previously
served as a member of the New York State Death Penalty Resource
Committee; and
WHEREAS, Furthermore, Judge Anthony F. Aloi has served his country
as a former Captain in the U.S. Army Judge Advocates General Corps; and
WHEREAS, A communicant of Our Lady of Pompeii Church, Judge Anthony
F. Aloi is a committed family man, having with him throughout his
journey his loving wife of 48 years, Camille, and his two grown children
Michelle (Marty) and Frank (Laura); and
WHEREAS, Upon his retirement, Judge Anthony F. Aloi will have more
time to spend with his family, especially his four grandsons, Matthew,
Tommy, Patrick Joseph and Anthony; he will also be able to devote more
time to his hobbies which include boating, fishing, skiing, and golf;
and
WHEREAS, Judge Anthony F. Aloi, in every capacity in which he has
served, has left a permanent mark on the criminal justice community, and
he will be forever remembered as a determined, innovative and genuinely
concerned expert in his field; and
WHEREAS, In honor of his lifelong service and retirement, Judge
Anthony F. Aloi's friends and family celebrated his distinguished career
at a gathering at Benjamin's in Downtown Syracuse on December 1, 2016;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
recognize and honor Judge Anthony F. Aloi upon the occasion of his
retirement, and to wish him well in all his future endeavors; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
presented to The Honorable Anthony F. Aloi.
