CONGRATULATING Horace H. Scott upon the occasion
of celebrating his 100th Birthday
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to commemorate
and recognize certain milestones celebrated by citizens of this great
Empire State; and
WHEREAS, Senior citizens bring a wealth of experience and knowledge
to the increasingly active roles they play in today's society; their
past contributions and future participation are a vital part of, and
valuable asset to, the fabric of community life and activity; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
congratulate Horace H. Scott upon the occasion of his 100th Birthday
celebrated with his family at his daughter's home on Christmas Day of
2017; and
WHEREAS, Horace H. Scott was born on December 25, 1917, in Poultney,
Vermont; he grew up in Whitehall, New York, where he got his first job
at the young age of 10; and
WHEREAS, An exceptional athlete, Horace H. Scott was a vital member
of his school's football team; when he was not earning money or at
school, he liked to work with wood, and spend time outdoors hiking and
camping; and
WHEREAS, As a young man, Horace H. Scott excitedly purchased his
first vehicle, a Dodge G-Boy; he still recalls driving to the swimming
hole in that fancy car with all of his friends; and
WHEREAS, In 1938, Horace H. Scott married his late wife, Harriett
Carpenter, on his birthday; it was a perfect day to celebrate Christmas,
Horace's birthday, and a wedding; Harriett and Horace proudly raised
three children, and were the loving grandparents of nine grandchildren
and eight great-grandchildren; and
WHEREAS, Horace H. Scott proudly served his country as a member of
the National Guard; he was scheduled to be deployed to Europe in
September of 1945, but World War II had already ended; and
WHEREAS, Horace H. Scott worked at and eventually ran two businesses
with his father, Harold Scott, Scott Funeral Home in Whitehall and Scott
Furniture in both Granville and Whitehall; and
WHEREAS, A vital and active member of his community, Horace H. Scott
was elected Mayor of Whitehall, and during the 1960s and 1970s, he
served as Town Supervisor; and
WHEREAS, Throughout his tenure, Horace H. Scott accomplished
numerous goals such as eliminating the deadly Route 4 overpass in
Comstock, New York; he also attracted new businesses to the area, built
a water tower on Skene Mountain and lobbied for a wing to be built at
the Skenesborough Museum; and
WHEREAS, For his steadfast and unremitting commitment to Washington
County, Horace H. Scott was the recipient of the 1985 Liberty Bell
Award; and
WHEREAS, At the age of 65, Horace H. Scott put his heart and soul
into building a cabin for himself in the woods, lugging each stone and
board to the top of the hill; he truly enjoyed the solitude and his
peaceful place in the middle of nature; he spent hours hiking through
the lush forest and whittling sticks he found into walking staffs; and
WHEREAS, Horace H. Scott, with his zest for life, has inspired and
enhanced the lives of his family and friends; and
WHEREAS, This distinguished man has experienced the incredible joys
and sorrows characteristic of and reserved for those with the stamina
and courage to savor a full life; and
WHEREAS, Horace H. Scott has enriched the lives of those around him
through his joyous and sincere love for others and through the quiescent
charm and wisdom which comes only from a fullness of years; and
WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to publicly
recognize those who have reached such a remarkable age and who have
witnessed and celebrated the innovations, cultural developments and
awesome achievements of this country during the last century, while
themselves contributing to the growth and excellence of this great
Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
congratulate Horace H. Scott upon the occasion of celebrating his 100th
Birthday; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Horace H. Scott.
