HONORING Commissioner Daniel Derenda upon the
occasion of his retirement after 32 years of
distinguished service to the Buffalo Police
Department

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and
honor those distinguished officers and citizens who would devote
themselves to public service, demonstrating great courage and diligence
in providing for the care and welfare of the citizens of their
communities and this great Empire State; and

WHEREAS, Within every community of the State of New York there are
certain individuals who, by virtue of their commitment and dedication,
command the respect and admiration of their community for their
exemplary contributions and service on behalf of others; and

WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Commissioner
Daniel Derenda upon the occasion of his retirement after 32 years of
distinguished service to the Buffalo Police Department on Tuesday,
January 16, 2018; and

WHEREAS, Daniel Derenda has valiantly served the Buffalo Police
Department for more than three decades, working his way up the ranks
from police officer, to detective, to sergeant, to deputy commissioner
and finally to commissioner, the esteemed position from which he
retired; and

WHEREAS, With a steadfast and unwavering commitment to his community
and profession, Daniel Derenda served with integrity and became known
for his enforcement of the law both on the streets and within his
organization; and

WHEREAS, Throughout his illustrious tenure as Buffalo Police
Commissioner, Daniel Derenda forged cooperation between the United
States Attorney's office and the Buffalo Police Department on issues
ranging from drug enforcements to police brutality, leading to what is
described as the golden age of crime fighting for the region; and

WHEREAS, Furthermore, over the past seven years Daniel Derenda has
been instrumental in the successful expansion of the Internal Affairs
Unit and collaboration with other law enforcement agencies; he also
increased community meetings between police supervisors and the public,
and welcomed city funding of citizens peacemaking groups; and

WHEREAS, Daniel Derenda has been the proud recipient of numerous
awards and accolades including the Mayor's Award of Merit, Officer of
the Month Award, the Detective Association's Distinguished Service
Award, and Am-Pol Eagle Citizen of the Year; and

WHEREAS, For 32 years, Daniel Derenda rendered faithful,
conscientious and valuable service to the Buffalo Police Department,
earning him the admiration, esteem and affection of his colleagues; and

WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the occurrence of such a compassionate
blending of strength, leadership, intellect, and commitment as that
demonstrated by Daniel Derenda over a lifetime of sacrifice and
dedication to others; and

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those
dedicated public servants who unselfishly devote their lives to the
preservation of order and the protection of others are worthy and due
full praise for their commitment and noble endeavors; now, therefore, be
it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Commissioner Daniel Derenda upon the occasion of his retirement
after 32 years of distinguished service to the Buffalo Police
Department; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Commissioner Daniel Derenda.
