COMMEMORATING the 200th Anniversary of the Town of
Amherst, New York, in Erie County

WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to honor and
commemorate the distinguished histories of the communities which
comprise the noble body of this great Empire State; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate the 200th Anniversary of the Town of Amherst, New York, in
Erie County; and

WHEREAS, This auspicious milestone will be celebrated with a myriad
of events throughout the year beginning on January 1, 2018, with a 200th
Birthday Party, and continuing with a parade, historic walking tours,
slogan contest, Interclub Service Club Luncheon, and culminating with a
Bicentennial Ball; and

WHEREAS, The largest and most populous suburb of Buffalo, New York,
the town of Amherst is comprised of 53.28 square miles, and encompasses
most of the village of Williamsville as well as the hamlets of
Eggertsville, Getzville, Snyder, Swormville, and East Amherst; and

WHEREAS, Located in the northern part of the county and bordering a
section of the Erie Canal, the Town of Amherst is home to approximately
125,000 residents; and

WHEREAS, Named after Lord Jeffrey Amherst, the Town was created from
parts of the Town of Buffalo by the State of New York on April 10, 1818;
Timothy S. Hopkins was elected the first Supervisor of the Town of
Amherst in 1819; and

WHEREAS, During the 19th Century, the Town of Amherst was a thriving
farming community with seven grist mills, saw mills, a tannery, a boot
and shoe factory and two forges with commercial activity centered in
neighboring Williamsville; and

WHEREAS, At the turn of the Century, the Town grew into an urban
community with the creation of new subdivisions, and the centrally
located Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital; and

WHEREAS, The Town of Amherst is also home to the north campus of the
University at Buffalo, the graduate campus of Medaille College, a
satellite campus of Bryant & Stratton College, and Daemen College; and

WHEREAS, The Town of Amherst offers its residents and visitors
numerous facilities and attractions to relax and spend time with family
and friends including a four rink recreational facility which attracts
national and international ice tournaments, a state of the art senior
center, three libraries, and a New York State Park; and

WHEREAS, Moreover, people can visit the Town of Amherst Archival
Research Center which is located in the Harlmen Road Community Center in

Amherst, and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in
2003; and

WHEREAS, Remaining fruitful over the ebb and flow of decades of
growth and change, the Town of Amherst continues its commitment to
enhancing the quality of life of its citizens, ensuring a positive
business, institutional and educational climate, and providing all
essential services; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 200th Anniversary of the Town of Amherst, New York,
recognizing the significance of the role it continues to play in the
life of the community of the State of New York; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Brian J. Kulpa, Supervisor, Town of Amherst.
