LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION memorializing Governor
Andrew M. Cuomo to proclaim January 29-February 2,
2018, as Tax Identity Theft Awareness Week in the
State of New York
WHEREAS, The State of New York takes great pride in recognizing
official weeks established to increase awareness of serious issues that
affect the lives of all New Yorkers; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to memorialize
Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to proclaim January 29-February 2, 2018, as Tax
Identity Theft Awareness Week in the State of New York, in conjunction
with the observation of National Tax Identity Theft Awareness Week; and
WHEREAS, Tax identity theft happens when someone uses your Social
Security number to get a tax refund or a job; you might find out it has
happened when you get a letter from the IRS saying more than one tax
return was filed in your name, when you e-file your tax return and
discover that a return already has been filed using your SSN, or IRS
records show you have wages from an employer you do not know; and
WHEREAS, The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and its partners are
hosting a series of free webinars and Twitter chats to raise awareness
and better educate the public about how to protect themselves and reduce
the chance of being a victim to this fast-growing crime; and
WHEREAS, If a resident of the State of New York discovers they have
been a victim of tax identity theft they should immediately contact the
IRS, complete an Identity Theft Affidavit form, file their tax return,
place a fraud report with one of the three credit bureaus, and monitor
their credit report; and
WHEREAS, Tax identity theft can cause a tremendous amount of damage;
it can disrupt a person's finances, credit history, and reputation, and
take time, money, and patience to resolve; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
memorialize Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to proclaim January 29-February 2,
2018, as Tax Identity Theft Awareness Week in the State of New York; and
be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to The Honorable Andrew M. Cuomo, Governor of the State of
New York.
