COMMENDING Joyce Smith for her 15 years of
distinguished service to the Queens County District
Attorney's Office

WHEREAS, It is the tradition of this State to pay just tribute to
those inspiring individuals who have substantially contributed to our
quality of life, as exemplified through a lifetime of thoughtful
community-building, munificent public service and zealous advocacy; and

WHEREAS, In full accord with its long-standing traditions, this
Legislative Body is justly proud to commend Joyce Smith for her 15 years
of service to the Queens County District Attorney's Office, to be
celebrated on Monday, January 22, 2018; and

WHEREAS, Joyce Smith was born and raised in Hollis, Queens; this
dynamic product of local public schools graduated Magna Cum Laude from
Adelphi University and subsequently, excelled at Howard University
School of Law where she received her Juris Doctor; and

WHEREAS, Joyce Smith immediately embarked upon a career of
remarkable and difference-making public service which has included three
different tours of duty at the Queens County District Attorney's Office;
and

WHEREAS, Joyce Smith also served our nation as a Staff Attorney at
the United States Commission on Civil Rights where she fastidiously
investigated discrimination cases, including those involving the denial
of equal protection of the laws; and

WHEREAS, Joyce Smith was tasked with multiple leadership positions
at the Mayor's Office to Combat Domestic Violence including Assistant
Commissioner, where she worked with great determination and tenacity on
this issue of critical importance to our children, families and
communities; and

WHEREAS, Joyce Smith most recently returned to the Queens County
District Attorney's Office in the position of Supervising Assistant
District Attorney of the Special Prosecutions Division where she has
been an invaluable mentor, community resource, leader, teacher, and
prosecutor; and

WHEREAS, Joyce Smith is a beacon and pillar in the community,
constantly giving back through her dedicated volunteerism on important
causes and insightful presentations to community groups; furthermore,
her work as a professor at no less than five colleges and universities
has shaped the minds, hearts and careers of multiple generations of
students; and

WHEREAS, Joyce Smith is now taking her immense passion, skills and
talent to the District Attorney's Office of Nassau County where she will
doubtlessly bring all of her gifts, energy, drive and experience, while
serving with her signature matchless dedication and tireless devotion;
now, therefore, be it


RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Joyce Smith for her 15 years of distinguished service to the
Queens County District Attorney's Office; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Joyce Smith.
