COMMENDING Local 891 International Union of
Operating Engineers (IUOE), Custodian Engineers upon
the occasion of hosting its 90th Annual Dinner Dance
on May 4, 2018

WHEREAS, It is the practice of this Legislative Body to take note of
and publicly acknowledge organizations and individuals of worthy purpose
whose endeavors have enhanced the quality of education in the great City
and State of New York; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commend Local 891 IUOE Custodian Engineers upon the occasion of hosting
its 90th Annual Dinner Dance on Friday, May 4, 2018, at Russo's on the
Bay in Howard Beach, New York; and

WHEREAS, Organized in 1924, Local 891 IUOE, Custodian Engineers of
the Department of Education of the City of New York are responsible for
the operation of most New York City Department of Education buildings;
they are the first line of defense against any unsafe situations which
could jeopardize our children; and

WHEREAS, The 850 skilled men and women of Local 891 IUOE continually
improve their skills in order to better serve the children and school
communities; by offering numerous educational programs, every one of its
members has been trained in safe boiler operation, fire safety, and
indoor air quality; and

WHEREAS, These hard workers are dedicated professionals who
diligently work to deliver high quality, efficient and accountable
services to all school children in their care; the Engineers operate the
heating, cooling and physical plants, and clean and perform minor
maintenance of the entire building and grounds; and

WHEREAS, For 24 hours a day, and for 365 days, Custodian Engineers
are always available to fix a problem at one of their schools; they take
great pride in performing their jobs in the most cost-effective manner
possible, thereby allowing excess money to be funneled back into the
classroom where it will benefit all public school children; and

WHEREAS, During and after the September 11th tragedy, Local 891
IUOE, Custodian Engineers were recognized for their tremendous efforts
in keeping the needed emergency buildings in continuous operation
throughout that devastating time, supplying all necessary services at no
salary cost to anyone; and

WHEREAS, For over a century, Local 891 IUOE has strived to provide
all children a safe environment in which to learn; under the luminous
leadership of Business Manager/President Robert J. Troeller, School
Custodian Engineers, partnered with the school communities, will
continue to deliver high quality, efficient and accountable services to
every child in our school system for many years to come; and

WHEREAS, The success of the City and State of New York, and of our
nation, depends on organizations such as Local IUOE, Custodian Engineers
and its members who have dedicated their lives to protecting our most
precious resource, our children; and

WHEREAS, Labor unions, through the integrity and dedication of their
leadership, have assumed an essential and integral role in ensuring the
welfare, safety and economic stability of the workers of this State and
Nation; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Local 891 IUOE, Custodian Engineers upon the occasion of hosting
its 90th Annual Dinner Dance on May 4, 2018; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Robert J. Troeller, Business Manager/President, Local 891
IUOE, Custodian Engineers.
