COMMENDING Mary McDonagh Manning upon the occasion
of her designation as Deputy Marshal of the 2018 Bay
Ridge St. Patrick's Day Parade
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
individuals of true purpose and worthy accomplishment who work
diligently to preserve and celebrate their rich cultural heritage; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commend Mary McDonagh Manning upon the occasion of her designation as
Deputy Marshal of the 2018 Bay Ridge St. Patrick's Day Parade; and
WHEREAS, In acknowledgment of this most prestigious appointment,
Mary McDonagh Manning will march as Deputy Marshal of the 25th Annual
Bay Ridge St. Patrick's Day Parade down 3rd Avenue in Brooklyn, New
York, on Sunday, March 25, 2018; and
WHEREAS, The Bay Ridge St. Patrick's Day Parade is meant to
recognize and celebrate Irish culture, heritage and pride, for those who
have emigrated here from the Emerald Isle, the Irish-American community,
as well as those who are Irish in spirit; and
WHEREAS, Mary McDonagh Manning was born to Thomas and Mary McDonagh
in County Galway in the picturesque, waterfront town of Roundstone;
through her father's work as a farmer and a horse breeder, Mary fell in
love with horses; and
WHEREAS, Mary McDonagh Manning and her brother, Paddy, organized
horse and pony shows on the fairgrounds in her hometown of Roundstone,
and for many years, she has served as an Executive Board Member of the
Connemara Pony Society running successful showcases of this unique breed
of pony for numerous years; and
WHEREAS, In 1968, Mary McDonagh Manning immigrated to the United
States, and settled in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, where she attended
cosmetology school; for numerous years, she worked as a beautician in
her community; and
WHEREAS, In 1970, Mary McDonagh Manning married the late Eugene
Manning, a New York City Police officer; together, the couple raised
three sons, Eugene, Paul, and Erik, in the Dyker Heights section of
Brooklyn; and
WHEREAS, Throughout her life, Mary McDonagh Manning has graciously
donated her time and energy to worthy organizations and to anyone who
needed a helping hand, especially Korean War and Vietnam War veterans;
and
WHEREAS, In her much deserved retirement, Mary McDonagh Manning
enjoys spending time with her five cherished grandchildren, Thomas,
Ryan, Grace, Jack and Ava; and
WHEREAS, Mary McDonagh Manning also loves to spend Sunday mornings
with her friends at the Kettle Black Restaurant in Bay Ridge, where she
is affectionately known as Mother Teresa, the Patron Saint of the Kettle
Black; and
WHEREAS, A St. Patrick's Day Parade reflects and records the ongoing
history of the United States and Ireland, and provides an opportunity
for people of all generations to assemble in ethnic pride and pageantry;
and
WHEREAS, A fitting choice for Deputy Marshal for the Bay Ridge St.
Patrick's Day Parade, Mary McDonagh Manning embodies the spirit and the
cherished ideals and values of Irish-Americans of this great State and
Nation; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when
individuals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our
attention, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens
of the great State of New York; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Mary McDonagh Manning upon the occasion of her designation as
Deputy Marshal of the 2018 Bay Ridge St. Patrick's Day Parade; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Mary McDonagh Manning.
