COMMENDING Brother Campion Lally upon the occasion
of his designation as Deputy Marshal of the 2018 Bay
Ridge St. Patrick's Day Parade
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
individuals of true purpose and worthy accomplishment who work
diligently to preserve and celebrate their rich cultural heritage; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commend Brother Campion Lally upon the occasion of his designation as
Deputy Marshal of the 2018 Bay Ridge St. Patrick's Day Parade; and
WHEREAS, In acknowledgment of this most prestigious appointment,
Brother Campion Lally will march as Deputy Marshal of the 25th Annual
Bay Ridge St. Patrick's Day Parade down 3rd Avenue in Brooklyn, New
York, on Sunday, March 25, 2018; and
WHEREAS, The Bay Ridge St. Patrick's Day Parade is meant to
recognize and celebrate Irish culture, heritage and pride, for those who
have emigrated here from the Emerald Isle, the Irish-American community,
as well as those who are Irish in spirit; and
WHEREAS, Robert Francis Lally was born to the late Francis and
Dorothy (Simon) Lally; he entered the Franciscan Brothers, an Irish
Congregation from Mount Bellew, County Galway, Ireland, in January of
1955 from St. Francis Prep, taking the religious name Campion;
recently, Campion Lally celebrated 62 years as a Franciscan Brother; and
WHEREAS, Brother Campion Lally earned his Bachelor of Science degree
in mathematics from St. Francis College in 1964, and a Master of Science
degree in mathematics education from Yeshiva University in 1966; and
WHEREAS, In 1956, Brother Campion Lally began his teaching career at
St. Joseph's School in Babylon, New York; he next taught at St.
Anthony's School in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, and then St. Mary, Star of the
Sea, in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn; and
WHEREAS, In 1960, Brother Campion Lally was assigned to St. Francis
Prep, where he taught both Latin and math; three years later, he was
transferred to Bishop Ford High School; in 1967, he returned to St.
Francis Prep as Chairman of the Math Department; and
WHEREAS, From 1983-1990, Brother Campion Lally held the title of
Assistant Principal of St. Francis Prep; for his steadfast and
unremitting commitment to education, he was named the Teacher of the
Year by the Brooklyn Diocesan Catholic Teachers Association and the
Emerald Society of the NYC Board of Education; and
WHEREAS, Dedicated to the children of his community, Brother Campion
Lally was elected to the Community School Board in District 14
(Greenpoint-Williamsburg) for 19 years, serving as its President for 11
years; concurrently, he was a member of the Board of Trustees of St.
Francis College in Brooklyn; and
WHEREAS, Brother Campion Lally then furthered his education at St.
John's University School of Law, where he was awarded his Juris Doctor
degree in 1991; after receiving his law degree, he worked as an attorney
in the Legal Department of the New York City Human Resources
Administration; and
WHEREAS, From 1994-1997, Brother Campion Lally served the Diocese of
Rockville Centre as Executive Director of the Office of Health Ministry;
in this capacity, he acted as Secretary of the Boards of Trustees of the
hospitals, hospices and nursing homes of the Catholic Health Services of
Long Island (CHS); and
WHEREAS, Brother Campion Lally has also been a vital member of the
Continuing Care Board of CHS, the Foundation Board of Our Lady of
Consolation Nursing and Rehabilitative Care Center in West Islip, New
York, and the General Council of the Franciscan Brothers; and
WHEREAS, In addition, Brother Campion Lally is a participant of the
St. Patrick Society of Brooklyn, and since 1993, he has served on the
Board of Directors of St. Agnes Academic High School in College Point,
New York; and
WHEREAS, Today, Brother Campion Lally works full time as Business
Manager and In-house Counsel for the Franciscan Brothers of Brooklyn,
and is a member of their Congregational Finance Committee; his areas of
practice include elder law, trusts and estates, and wills and real
estate; and
WHEREAS, A St. Patrick's Day Parade reflects and records the ongoing
history of the United States and Ireland, and provides an opportunity
for people of all generations to assemble in ethnic pride and pageantry;
and
WHEREAS, A fitting choice for Deputy Marshal for the Bay Ridge St.
Patrick's Day Parade, Brother Campion Lally embodies the spirit and the
cherished ideals and values of Irish-Americans of this great State and
Nation; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when
individuals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our
attention, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens
of the great State of New York; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Brother Campion Lally upon the occasion of his designation as
Deputy Marshal of the 2018 Bay Ridge St. Patrick's Day Parade; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Brother Campion Lally.
