COMMENDING Dr. Mark F. Sherman upon the occasion
of his designation for special recognition by the
Federation of Italian-American Organizations of
Brooklyn, Ltd. on April 8, 2018
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize that
the quality and character of life in the communities across New York
State are reflective of the concerned and dedicated efforts of those
individuals who would devote themselves to the welfare of the community
and its citizenry; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commend Dr. Mark F. Sherman upon the occasion of his designation for
special recognition by the Federation of Italian-American Organizations
of Brooklyn, Ltd., to be celebrated at its 41st Annual Gala on Sunday,
April 8, 2018; and
WHEREAS, For the last 43 years, the Federation of Italian-American
Organizations of Brooklyn, Ltd. has stayed true to its mission of
promoting unity in its multi-cultural community; this vital organization
strives to instill and preserve the highest ideal of Americanism,
provide mutual assistance and encourage greater participation; and
WHEREAS, Born in Brooklyn, New York, Dr. Mark F. Sherman comes from
a family of physicians; after watching his father care for the athletes
of the Public School Athletic League of New York City and Lafayette High
School, he was inspired to become an orthopedic sports medicine
physician; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Mark F. Sherman earned his degree magna cum laude from
Brooklyn College; in 1975, he graduated from New York University Medical
School, where he was a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Society; and
WHEREAS, In 1980, Dr. Mark F. Sherman successfully completed a
fellowship in sports medicine under the auspices of the late Dr. John
Marshall at the Hospital for Special Surgery; he then served as an
orthopedic surgeon, specializing in sports medicine; and
WHEREAS, Three years later, Dr. Mark F. Sherman assumed the title of
Director of Sports Medicine at St. Vincent's Medical Center in
Manhattan, where he had been active with the Sports Medicine Clinic for
Special Surgery since 1980; and
WHEREAS, Since 1993, Dr. Mark F. Sherman has been a valuable member
of the staff of the Staten Island University Hospital, and The Hospital
for Special Surgery in New York City, as well as the Director of
Orthopedics at Richmond University Medical Center in Staten Island; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Mark F. Sherman has proudly been recognized as one of
New York Magazine's Best Doctors for the past 10 years; and
WHEREAS, Taking after his beloved father, Dr. Mark F. Sherman is an
official Public School Athletic League Consultant for the City of New
York, taking care of numerous high schools in Brooklyn and Staten
Island; and
WHEREAS, For the past 18 years, Dr. Mark F. Sherman has held the
position of Director of Staten Island Orthopedics and Sports Medicine
Fellowship Program, an Arthroscopy Association of North America approved
fellowship; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Mark F. Sherman has written numerous sports medicine
publications in orthopedic journals, presentations, orthopedic
conventions and conferences, and was the host of a TV Sports Medicine
show, known as the "Sports Doc," which won the 1999 Telly Award; and
WHEREAS, Today, Dr. Mark F. Sherman works in private orthopedic
practice on Staten Island where he and his partners serve thousands of
patients each year; and
WHEREAS, Dedicated to the community in which he lives and works, Dr.
Mark F. Sherman has been actively involved in the Jewish Community
Center of Staten Island for the past 20 years; he served as the
Chairperson of the 2000 Maccabi Games which included 1,500 teenagers
from all over the world competing in an Olympic-type experience in New
York; and
WHEREAS, Eight years ago, Dr. Mark F. Sherman and his friend
established the Unity Games, an interracial, educational event which
uses basketball as a vehicle to teach seventh and eighth grade children
about life; and
WHEREAS, With him throughout have been his three children, Seth,
Nicole and Sean, all of whom have shown him love and support and rejoice
in his many achievements; together, the family is known throughout the
world for their fly-fishing accomplishments; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those who
enhance the quality of life in their community and have shown a long and
sustained commitment to the maintenance of high standards in their
profession, certainly have earned the recognition and applause of all
the citizens of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Dr. Mark F. Sherman upon the occasion of his designation for
special recognition by the Federation of Italian-American Organizations
of Brooklyn, Ltd.; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Dr. Mark F. Sherman.
